Installed Euro grills on the 91 318is today! Looks awesome, together with the US Ellipsoid headlights I installed recently. :wrenchtime: :wrenchtime:

Weighed the E12 today. Kind of incidentally, I did a dump run and they are charging by the pound these days so an in and out weigh.

Drumroll please, 3200 pounds! Lighter than the owners manual says and lighter than I expected. Makes me wonder about M30 E28s since they are lighter. (I think) And it was even with a full tank of gas. Well, a full tank less 18 miles.

I waited until #2 son returned and the we loaded up the Rat with forks and a tarp. Going in search of salt marsh hay. Swamp Yankee free fertilizer. Great for mulching around plants to shade out weeds. It turns to soil in a yr. Good stuff In a 1/2 hour, we gathered a heaping load and skedaddled. Only 3 miles from the house. :)

Replaced the 83 year old broken speedometer cable in my 1933 Packard Twelve with a new one. Hope it lasts 83 years.

Stripped down the 13b some more. Gearing up to get some Weber IDA action on.

I can't wait.

I backed the Rat down by garden Tuesday to unload the marsh hay into the garden. I finished unloading it today and the radio was on. but low. Flat batt . In the gathering gloom I rig an extension cord and set the charger on 2 amps. I don't get out much.

Check engine light popped up last week on the nothing ever goes wrong E36. Coded to a Camshaft position sensor, and it was running like crap. The part came in yesterday and it was a hair past easy to install, but not bad. Reset the light and it stayed out on a couple of starts and a short test drive. Threw some new plugs in too, they were at 55K but only 10K overdue. Twin electrode plugs and one had one broken off. Ooops. But running ok and no signs of damage on the plug. But it's going to start costing me money now, it's almost due for O2 sensors and a cooling system refresh.

Got the oil metering pump delete stuff for the RX7.....and it rained.

So I played with the Rover....I've been soaking #7 in MMO.

Failed.

So looks like I've got to get the RX7 together and going for some kind of small victory....then tear the #7 piston out of the Rover and re-ring it.

I did get some new front tires for the Gristle Hammer though. That's fun, right?

It amazes me that at 317,000 miles, it still has one of the best looking interiors in our driveway.

Then fixed the seatbelt on my mom's gl.
When we bought it, i failed to notice that one of the 3rd row seat belts had lodged itself down in the side of the body. This is all while trying to see what was preventing the driver's side 3rd row from locking. But that mystery still remains...

Driving the 91 318is to work today, I thought I smelled coolant. On the way back home, I smelled it again. Just happened to stop and check out a 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and popped the hood.

Shit! Coolant pooled under the oil filter housing and on the engine block.

Grabbed the flashlight for a closer look and sure enough, the 5/8in rubber cap I bought at NAPA to cap off the plastic coolant pipe where I deleted the throttle body heater is ripped all the way around just above the BMW hose clamp. I limped it the rest of the way home, thank goodness the temp gauge didn't move at all/no overheating.

Went to Autozone in the E28 to get another crappy Chinese part to replace the crappy Chinese part that failed on the E30. After exactly 1 year and 16,000 miles.

Got everything buttoned up and the coolant system bled just as it got dark this evening.

That first pic is probably the best one I've seen of mid life crisis, this whole set is good but that first is crispy to the totality degree.

Edit: just noticed the second picture- the driver seat is fully extended like Shaq was the driver. How tall you is there?

Thanks!
That's actually the passenger seat. The kid likes to tilt it back a bit, drives my OCD nuts.
I'm only ~5'10", the seat hides in the B pillar section.

More E36, the ultimate commuting machine. 95K since the last cooling system refresh so it was due again even without problems. New radiator, water pump, coolant tank and upper radiator hose. Should be good for another 100k, but I don't see it happening in my hands. Well, it will need O2 sensors soon and a P and P driveshaft I picked up, but other than that I think it's pretty solid.

Just call me Captain. Captain Hazelwood.

I did a full tranny service on the E39it today. Pull the fill plug first, just to make sure... and the better part of a quart ended up on my garage floor. Pull the drain plug, and didn't have it in quite the right spot. More on the floor. Remove the pan, and due to it's odd shape and angle a bunch more is on the floor. By now I've got sawdust up to half an inch thick over several square feet underneath the car. So I pull the filter and seemingly another quart comes out. Cleaning the pan, R and R'ing a new filter, installing the pan were all relatively uneventful, as was even refilling it. But next time I'm only doing a drain and fill, no filter BS. Took 3 shampoo cycles and 3 bar soap cycles to get all the ATF out of my hair. Buying the freaking $12/liter fluid was the most pleasurable part. And that was a veritable steal. Grrrrrr...

Whelp, finally got around to pulling the head off the D2.

Quick recap: Headgaskets/WP done around 100k (year and a half ago). I was towing home a S3 when the engine started ticking. I had topped up the oil before leaving, but hadn't checked it before driving home. The front crank seal was leaking pretty badly. Oil pressure light NEVER came on. Topped up the oil, ticking went away....but ever since then I've had MAJOR oil consumption and plug fouling on cylinder 7. Oil consumption was around 1qt every 40 miles or so. NO leaks (I fixed the crank seal).
Did a compression test, all great numbers. Leakdown, again, fantastic. This was around 6 mos ago, so I can't remember the numbers, but they were fine. Looked into the #7 bore with a camera and there was a nice, thick line of oil down the bore as I rotated the cylinder from TDC to BDC. Figure I broke or seized up a piston oil ring.
Over the past couple days I pulled the cylinder head to investigate....here's my findings.
No damage to the headgasket, bores look great. Cylinder 7 piston top and combustion chamber are BLACK. Other's are fairly clean.
Methinks I'll be fine pulling the piston, re-ringing, and reassembling.

Instrument cluster (and radio) pixel problems are a frequent E39 issue. I'd replaced the cluster cable last year, not perfect, but ok. Until a couple of weeks ago when overnight it was definitely not ok. So I ordered a couple of cables, ~$10 ea. 2 just cause...

Tonight, after 12-14 hours in the past two days on the cluster I have it a little bit better than when I started. First cable, part worked great, part not so good, I figured due to me, there were some issues. So start all over with the second cable. Oh yeah, much worse. Numbers on top of numbers, totally illegible. In and out. Forgot the steering wheel was off so I set off the airbag light. More  Finally to try to make it semi readable for the weekend in Portland I put in the first of the two new cables. With much ado. And it's a little better than when I started. Not a lot, but better. But the airbag light is now on. Still more

Finally adjusted the handbrake on the 130i. It is nice to park on a hill without having to walk down to the bottom to collect the car afterwards. I also decided it needs a limited slip. E92 M3 spec bolts in apparently, so it's time to start shopping. All for the wife's safety of course.

E 12 - Drove it to breakfast and for a loop around Lake Conroe

E34 - Buttoned up the access panel for the A/C blower motor that I just installed. Started digging out the sword and reattaching the stepper motors for IHKA.

RoadMonster - inserted new clips in the freshly wrapped side trim pieces.
