Just got off duty. 730A Fri - 730A this morning.

Of course, it's a payday weekend, the weather getting a little more bearable, and it was Friday the 13th; I expected trouble.

The only trouble I got was a black cat (no kidding) on one of my barracks tours. Quiet and secure, otherwise.

Now some sleep.

For Christmas last year my oldest son gave the wife & me a gift card for a "couples massage" at a local beauty salon; it was good, but had some awkward moments. First was the funny looks I got while sitting in the waiting area; I don't think they see many bald guys at a hair salon. Then the massage was a string of slightly awkward moments... this was my first time. The masseuse was a perky young blonde thing named Megan; I think it was better for me than it was for her though.

My daughter stopped by for a visit & told a chilling tale... She lives in an apartment in a small farm town near Yankton, SD, and not surprisingly, has been finding crickets around the apartment. The other day she smacked one with a slipper, then went to get a paper towel to pick it up, but when she returned, it looked like a worm was coming out of the cricket, so she sat & watched. Sure enough, it was a worm of some sort, about 6" long! It was a big cricket, but she didn't think it was big enough for a parasite like that.

I'd never heard of such a thing, so tonight I did a Google search for cricket parasites, and sure enough...

Wow. When the parasite reaches it's adult stage it normally induces the host to commit suicide in water where the worm lives out it's days.

I couldn't agree more. Typically my visits to YouTube involve watching at least one or two more short videos, but I have no interest whatsoever in whatever YouTube thinks is associated with or related to that video.

I have as much use for watching what Dave is describing as I do looking at people's fucked up toes. SERIOUSLY? Do we need to see photos of your injuries? Make it a link. I'm not a coroner for a reason.

Enough is enough!! Why are the shells sticking to the hard-boiled egg? Did I boil too slow? Too fast? Is it because they are free range hen eggs? I end up having a nibble of the white. Sheesh.

Did you peel under cold running water? This helps. Also fresher eggs are harder to peel, free range or not.

I tried that this morning, in accordance with your suggestion, and it worked great. Thanks. I will keep with that method, and check back periodically to keep everyone posted.

I came across my first rotten egg in the shell the other day. Took an egg out of the fridge, cracked it open and it sprayed/exploded all over. Huh. So that is how you tell if an egg is rotten.

Eggs that have been in the fridge for about a week peel best. Also, I add a bit of salt to the water; that supposedly helps. My wife never worries about it though; she'll hack through a soft boiled egg with a knife, then uses a spoon to scoop it out. Then she rolls her eyes at everybody else wondering why everybody else complains about the eggs being hard to peel.

...and speaking of peeling, I just peeled my toenail off this morning.

My Dad was a pretty bright guy. Very bright and informed actually. He told me one time I shouldn't have any MRIs due to the arc welding I've done. I've never done it as my job, but I have as part of my job. Something about the fumes from welding could get in your eyes, stay there and MRIs were so strong a magnetic field they would pull it right out. I dunno if that's correct or not, I've never had an MRI, nor read about it since.

Speaking of effed up toes... (No pics, mmkay?)

I've run every day since Aug 12. I agreed to do a race next saturday night with a co-worker, the options were: 7k, 25k, 50k, 75k, and 100k. He was thinking about doing the 50k, but wanted company, I quickly opted for the 25k.
He's a pretty serious runner, but I agreed to do this on about Aug 15th, so even the 25k was a lofty goal. He suggested long runs of 8, 10, 12, and 14. I counter offered 6, 8, 10, and 12. I just wasn't ready to do 8 that first week. That extra 3 miles will just have to take care of themselves.

ANYWAY, I have that freak thing were the second toe is longer than the big toe. AND I wear a size 15 already, so there isn't much to be done. I've lost both of those second toes before, one on each marathon I've done. Well, two weeks ago, one was tender and bruised, then 3 days later the second went purple. Sigh. I got new shoes and they don't hurt anymore, but I may be past the point of no return.

Tonight was 12.45 miles. 2:12:30. I'm not breaking any land speed records, but I am miles better than I was a month ago. Having to ramp up this much distance, I cannot do all kinds of speed work, too.
The race will be slower, probably, but dammit, I'm gonna run every step.

Size 15 shoes?!? Dang son, that is close to waterski category. Do you have to special order shoes? No offense, really, I wouldn't like to be stomped by boots that big, especially worn by a military guy. What are you, 6'-4" tall, at least?

Ever worn a pair of shoes even a half size too small for a day? Slow, creeping, miserable discomfort that ramps up hour after hour. Strange, achy pain at that.

Yet another thing we have in common. I've never had trouble with my long toe getting sore and bruised, though. I started running with Merrill barefoot shoes (I have road gloves and trail gloves) and have started pushing off with my toes more since switching to those shoes and I have a much improved arch.

My rental for this trip is a challenger, so far its kind of underwhelming. It's not as hard to see out of as the Camaro but you still change lanes by feel. Other than that it feels like any other rental I've had recently.

Just broke ground for our new facility here at work. Kinda deja vous ish. Cant wait to have my very own desk again.

There is a walnut tree next to the street about 100' down from where the e28 is parked. A couple of days ago I saw a squirrel run out from under the e28, and something made me think that he hopped down from the underside of it... Didn't think much about it at the time, but this morning, while driving the e28 to work (haven't driven it since Monday) I heard a little 'thump' as I was slowing for a stoplight, then saw a green walnut go rolling along the curb into the intersection. Looks like I need to do some inspecting and see how many other nuts that furry-tailed tree rat has squirreled away in my car.

I have pecan trees and the buggers have actually thrown green pecans at me and the cars.

Anti Freeze doesn't evaporate. I was over at one of our buildings today where an E39 lost it's cooling system a couple of days ago and it's still obvious. Yah, I was walking into CVS and saw a green puddle in a parking space. At least a cup I'd guess. BB Shiftless appears to have a corroded gazinta where the gazotta from the filter connects. Nonplussed, it should have been just the original hose because it had a tear and cracks and part numbers , It is a formed hose I have several feet left from the 5 meter.roll of hose so I plan to sub tract a few inches of the line or just shove the hose further forward on the line.

Follow up, I used the plan I had formulated last night. I had the LR on blocks. I should have rolled the car back to ground and jacked it up and take the wheel. off for access. I didn't. Instead I raised it higher with bottle jacks. The line was rotted to the first clip. Efforts to unscrew it were useless. I used a method an oral surgeon used on me. Clamp on forceps and a quick twist and yank. Took a few cycles but I won. The rest was easy. I slowly bent the line out in the wheel well. Then I cut about 3 " off . I had made the hose long enough to accommodate. I found another clamp, and slid the hose on a good inch and a half. I set the clamps 180' from each other and tightened them. I started the car, As usual, it had a long crank to light off. That was the clue that there was a problem. Victory ! There was a pin hole in the second swage . The clamps hold pressure. I put the wheel back on and Marina is off to a bridal shower.
