Sorry, thought that I had already changed the settings to allow those that have the link to view it.
Oktoberfest is still going but a lot of us bailed out today. It was great to see some old friends and meet some new ones. I think the e28 has really been elevated in status in the last few years and is finally getting the respect that it deserves. I can't tell how many comments I got from people that came around before rags down saying things like, "I had an e28 and still regret selling it" and "the e28 was the best car I ever owned".
I don't know why, but I'm beat and glad to be back in SoCal. I had kind of a late start out of PacGrove which was going to put me on the 405 through LA/OC at the absolute worst time of day so I decided to stop for the night in Ventura and have dinner with an old flame. I'm at some dump near the harbor but it's clean and has secure parking. I'm going to have a shower and martini before din-din.
I have a bunch more pics but I'll wait until I get home to go through them.
I hope everyone who drove made it/makes it home without incident.

Sounds like we're going to miss each other tomorrow: I'm heading to Ventura in the afternoon for a meeting at the County building. Smart move stopping for the night
Glad to hear everyone had a good time. I'll have to see about making it next year.
Chas, you wouldn't believe how smart of a move that was!!! RonP and I gassed up in Ventura at 3pm, and rolled into NPB at 6:45. The 101/405 was stop and go the whole way starting halfway between Ventura and Woodland Hills. We had to pull over and get out of our rides because our knees and hips were toast from clutching and braking so much. If someone had offered to do a manual to auto swap, I swear I would have gone for it right then and there.Karl Grau wrote: I had kind of a late start out of PacGrove which was going to put me on the 405 through LA/OC at the absolute worst time of day so I decided to stop for the night in Ventura and have dinner with an old flame. Jeff and I Left Pacific Grove with Charles leading the way. We hit the 101 and headed south leaving troubles in the slow lane. Turned east for some fun roads and then headed back west. Stopped at some wineries in Paso, got a tour or two, bought some wine or many and have settled in for the night at a great hotel right on the beach in Pismo.
The plan is to get up in the morning and do it again; head east on fun roads and then come back west and stay at the beach.
Guess what is going on Friday?
All of this is on the Underhill's tab.

It'll be interesting.
A lineup NOT to be missed for sure
See ya all on Tuesday. And I'll guarantee I'll be there before rags down this time. The competition is forcing me too.
Mike
I made it home at 12:30am. Left Pacific Grove with OcCoupe around 10am and headed down the 1. Had no cell phone reception for a couple hours. Took the 1 to SLO and met up with a couple other Orange County folks, then on the 101. They opted for a more coastal route, so I stayed on the 101. Then was told too late that I was supposed to get on the 134. I stayed on 101. Then I got lost in North Hollywood. Eventually got on the 134, took the 2 to I-5 south to the 10. I had filled up (too full) with fuel in SLO, so I figured I could make it to AZ with that, but the light came on 35 miles from Blythe (I wish I hadn't gotten lost). So I started playing the fuel consumption game and was pleased to find that God had instructed great men to build a Valero 7 miles from Blythe so I stuck a couple gallons in and filled up just across the border in AZ. Apparently 30L today isn't the same as it was in 1985.
Oddly enough, Pacific Grove, CA had the least-expensive fuel on the entire trip through California. I don't get it.
Car ran really well on the way back and was really pleasant to drive. I had a great trip. It's amazing how work stacks up while you are gone though.

I got home about an hour and a half ago. Except for a leak in a oil cooler line, the M5 ran great for the whole 1036 miles. I left Ventura about 9:30 after buying more oil and took Hwy 1 down through Malibu to Santa Monica where I cut over to the 405. The 405 was the least congested I ever driven it in my life so LA/OC was painless. I stopped in Costa Mesa to add oil and then took the 5 to Encinitas where I cut over to PCH because of traffic.
Damn, that video was deja vu: I did that exact route about 8 hours later. Decided to avoid the 101 at 5:30pm and take the scenic route back to WLA. Still took nearly 1.5 hours though, but at least it wasn't in stop and go gridlock.Karl Grau wrote:I got home about an hour and a half ago. I was pretty shocked by the burn area from Pt. Mugu on south; I forgot how big of fire that was.
Glad everyone made home in one piece with little drama.

Of course the drink daddy, and the motliest of crews:
I think the Stuttgart Special is feeling a bit out of place, BMW parking only please:
Oh the Coupes:
Charles and I were too bust talking about product to have noticed that his m5 had rolled past 300,000 miles:

Bucket list
The Monterey Historic week is one of the best, if not the best, automotive series of events that one could experience. A week's worth of events that all ramp up to one very special event, The Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance. It is arguably the finest Concours event in the United States, if not the world. The mix of people is impressive and the cars are even more so. Some of the finest examples of automobiles one can imagine, actually if you haven't been there then you really can't imagine it. I've always enjoyed sharing this with friends when I can, the looks on their faces when they see the venue and the cars is worth all the effort. What is very cool about the Pebble Beach Concours is that you can be standing next to a multi x10 millionaire who is readying his priceless gem for judging and he is just as nervous as we are when we are readying our e28's for a show. In addition that same person is eager to talk to you and share his/her story. The people are so nice and don't care if you are a popper, they just want to know that you are a car guy.
This event should be on everyone's bucket list. It isn't cheap, it isn't easy to get to, and lodging is hard to find. I will extend this to any of you who want to go but can't make all the ends meet. If I am lucky enough to have a place when you are there, I will make sure a couch is available for you to surf on. Heck I'll even make you dinner!
This year is my last year of competitively showing my e28 she has been good to me. Thanks to the help and encouragement of many friends and my wife, we went up to accomplish one final goal and that is what we did. I have been fortunate and have put a tremendous amount of work into her and the results have been amazing. I never thought that I would have much success; but I wouldn't have had any if it wasn't for the help and support I have received from fellow BMW enthusiasts and most importantly Susan.
I hope that some of this has encouraged others to take their cars to a higher level, our cars deserve it!
Back in 2011 I wasn't able to get my car ready in time to go to Legends of the Autobahn which would have been my first time at the show. We just couldn't get her done in time. So I rented a VW and beat that thing all the way to Monterey. Darin was driving Murray Fowler's Atlantic Blue 2002, while Charles, Jeff, and John drove their own cars. This is the most environmental way to travel. When we got to Legends everyone was busy getting their cars ready except for me and John since he wasn't showing either. We ran into this man who was prepping his stunning m6, Carlos Cardenas. He was a bit arrogant and was putting on a big show with his car. He had trailer his car in and had wrapped each wheel with booties to protect from dirt and grass. He also had tape all over the edges of his windows and tape on the door sills. I approached him and introduced myself. I pointed to the spot where my car was supposed to be positioned and explained that I was his competition and that my car didn't make it, he looked at me, went "humph" and turned around and walked away from me. Later that year at Van Nuys I met him again, this time I had my car. I walked up to him, shook his hand and said remember me? I'm the guy who;s car didn't make it to Monterey, and I pointed to my car. He walked up to my car, got on the ground and looked at the underside of my car. He then got up and walked away. Ok, so now I'm thinking he's not so nice or he had to go to the bathroom, I'm not sure which one.
Fast forward to May of 2013
Paul Cain said to me a few years ago that you win a competition once and then that's it, walk away and let someone else have at it next year. I think he's on to something. So last year I won the Concours category at Legends of the Autobahn I was done. I had planned on entering Oktoberfest. Legends and Oktoberfest let you see who registered and in what category. I glanced at the Legends website to see who was entered when low and behold I see the name C.H. Cardenas 1987 m6 registered in the Concours class. Mind you I had not intended on entering; but after seeing his name I couldn't help myself. I called Paul Cain and explained my situation and he said do it!!! So I did... I spent the next few months stressing out and driving Susan up the wall. I worked obsessively and ran in to many hurdles. Stupid ones at that. One of the Concours entries and friend (Mike Pelly) suggested we trailer our cars up so I arranged for the guy who does most of our hauling to take both of our cars to Monterey. We arrived at Legends on Friday and all three of our cars were lined up next to each other from left to right Mike Pelly in his freshly restored 2002tii with 303 miles on it, Carlos Cardenas with his stunning 38,000 mile 1-owner 1987 m6, and Mike Burger with 81,000 mile 1988 Bronzit 535i. We worked like lunatics prepping our cars, Carlos with his booties, Pelly with his Hawaiian shirt and me with my Pepto Bismol Quick Detailer. Towels down came early for Pelly and me since we had to go to a judges meeting which lasted way too long as we had to get back to our cars to do the last bits of preparation. Susan had been working on making sure all the bolts on the BBS's were clean and also the brake and clutch pedals. I thought for sure Carlos had the 2nd place win in the bag after Pelly's first and me at third. After the judging, we went around slappin' each other on the asses and drinking our grape knee hi's. The work was over but the anxiety still lingered. At Legends the head judge sends out a team of people to hand out cards to the entries that were going to be getting an award. All three of us got a card, they only hand three out per category and there were 12 entries in the Concours category. We all lined up in front of the crowd as they announced the winners of the clean category for post war Porsche then came our turn. In 3rd place Carlos Cardenas, 2nd. Mike Pelly, and in 1st. Mike Burger. I was shocked and elated!!! I beat Carlos Cardenas, I won!!! Unfortunately I also did what I didn't intend to do, I beat my friend Mike Pelly. My one and only goal was to beat Carlos and since Mike's car was fresh out of restoration I figured neither of us had a chance at beating him. I still don't understand how that happened; but Mike and I talked afterwards and he was a great sport about the whole thing. He later went on to take 1st. place in Concours Original at the BMWCCA Oktoberfest the following Tuesday.

Congrats again Mike, you so deserve every accolade you've received with the amount of effort you put in prepping for these events. I got to ask you one question though; is the lost drinking time while prepping worth it? J/K, obviously it is. Great write up too, you summed it up perfectly. Next time I'll definitely plan on making the Pebble Beach gig. Was Carlos parked next to you at the SD clean car contest in 2012? If that was him, I know what you mean. He more than likely was the reason the old joke "What's the difference between a BMW driver and a porcupine? The porcupine has the pricks on the outside" was coined.
Oh, no big woop, but Carol only has one "r" in her name. You must be thinking of Shelby. My Carol has way better legs.
