Maytag: The Alpine '87 529i
I pick Maytag up tomorrow and it's time for the snow tires to come off and the Conti DWs mounted to the "clean enough for Maytag" Style 8s.
I came within whisker of getting these powder coated today. I had them at Powdervision and JR & I had settled on a silver that was almost close enough. Then I realized it was stupid to pay more to have them powder coated than Kohler was selling his for.
So I bore down with elbow grease and the steam cleaner tonight and got most of the dust off the outer rim. I gave up trying to get between the spokes clean.

One of the Style 8s is bent. Found out after the tires went on.
Not bad enough to be a problem, according to my tire guy, but fraking annoying. They'll be fine on Maytag. Will mount tonight.
Here's some pics of the newly installed windshield trim. Done right. Finally.
That lower lock strip is a BITCH.

You may recall that when I base lined the car I blew off doing the brakes knowing that I'd be swapping wheels off after winter and I needed to replace the front right wheel bearing too.
The time has come. This morning I got started.
I'm replacing all hoses and both the front & rear sensor wires. The hoses look like they are original.
The rear brakes look great. The caliper seals are solid, the pads have plenty of wear left, and the rotors are fine. I had expected the rear rotors to be fine, so I'm glad that's the case. I'm replacing the pads anyway, since I want less dust.
I've dropped the rear rotors off to get them turned...which is convenient because the store didn't have the lines in stock and they'll be coming from another store by this afternoon.
I had already bought a set of new front rotors, because I could tell the fronts were worn. I measured and they are just below 21mm, and the min is 20.4mm.
Interestingly the left front pads are MUCH MORE worn than the right pads. I wonder if this is due to the front left piston boot being loose? Maybe it was sticking?
Left:
Right:
I've got new seals for the pistons, so I'll be doing that anyway.
The ABS wires need to be re-wrapped; I'll be using F4 tape. Nothing else looked amiss.
It seems replacing the wheel bearing is pretty straight forward. I hope to get it all done this evening.

I think you're going to need to replace the dust caps on the wheel hub with the later style to use the style 8s on that car. Otherwise the caps won't click in place.
I imagine your pads are more worn because of a sticking caliper. I wouldn't recommend turning rotors, but I guess you have nothing to lose but money and time.

Thanks for the tip on the dust caps... a ton. I would have been very annoyed to have discovered this myself.wkohler wrote:I think you're going to need to replace the dust caps on the wheel hub with the later style to use the style 8s on that car. Otherwise the caps won't click in place.

I've always turned rotors when changing pads. Bentley's says you should.
Just checked RealOEM for both the E28 and E31 (e.g. Style 8 wheels) and the cap has the same PN for both (31206777789).

If this is, in fact, the "new style" cap then because the stealer likely has them in stock. Is it?

I don't know. I'd check the Tech FAQ.

The part number was superseded for the E28 caps. I figure new BMWs have electronic virtual dust caps but they might be in stock.

Progress on the brakes.
I'm pretty much done except for
- The left front caliper. I want to make sure I don't end up with the same issue that seems to have caused uneven pad wear before. See this thread: http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=33678&highlight=
- I don't have a 46mm socket and thus bailed on replacing the right bearing. I'll do it another time. A few hundred miles won't kill it
Some pr0n.
F4 tape wraped ABS wires. The original covering was toast. I had some red and figured I needed to use it SOMEWHERE...

Blarg. I can't get the brakes to bleed.
I'm solo so I'm tyring to use the Mytyvac vacuum pump I've used on the 911 successfully before.
Of course most fluid gravity drained out of the system over night, so I'm going to be sucking a lot of air, but even there something doesn't seem right.
I pumped the brake pedal 15 times before opening the left rear nipple, which had my vac attached. I then started pumping and opened the nipple. I got maybe 5oz of fluid out and then nothing.
I've closed everything up and re-pumped the pedal and tried over. I've even tried it on the left front (and rear) but am not getting ANY fluid.
Each time I close the system and re-pump the pedal the first time it goes to the floor and then after 6 or so pumps it gets hard.
Is my vac just not sucking enough? That's kinda what it seems like.
Oh and I was careful to never let the reservoir get empty; it had plenty of fluid in it even after sitting all night.

Ok, I took the high road and skipped all of the obvious jokes, though my wife and I had a good laugh at all of the good quote opportunities...
Just spit balling here, but your right front brake line doesn't look right. Like it's too short or routed incorrectly. Did you replace all of the soft lines? If the reservoir is not losing fluid with a mityvac, I would think something is plugged up.
I use a mityvac too and the only time I've had an issue is with too small of a compressor. Make sure your nipple is fully opened (sounds dumb, but I found my M5 to need almost a full turn) and all of the hoses and rubber connector are air leak free on the mityvac.
I usually start with the right rear until I have clear fluid. Move to LR, RF, LF, then back around one more time, using up about 1 quart.

My wife said that when she uses her mouth, she gets plenty of fluid out!cek wrote: ...sucking a lot of air...after 6 or so pumps it gets hard...but am not getting ANY fluid...I got maybe 5oz of fluid out and then nothing...
Oh yea, I would pull fluid through the new caliper first.
I'm not saying it is routed wrong, just that it looks stretched, possibly just from the suspension droop. I just looked at two of mine at rest, but couldn't really tell anything.
Just get a family member to hop in and manually bleed. Easy to see if something comes out then.
Here's a better (?) pic. I'm sure the lines are routed right, but then I've been sure of things before.dsmith wrote:My wife said that when she uses her mouth, she gets plenty of fluid out!cek wrote: ...sucking a lot of air...after 6 or so pumps it gets hard...but am not getting ANY fluid...I got maybe 5oz of fluid out and then nothing...

My fam is gone so I'm all by my lonesome until tomorrow. I wish you and your wife lived nearby.
Seriously, thanks for the input and help.

Wish I could be there, but I take delivery of an 87 535is in the morning, though it will become more like a 533is...
Front right is the only one I have't tried to bleed yet.
FWIW, I'm slowly getting just a little bit through the RR (and FL). But i'm pumping like cray.
It just took a long time. But eventually I got clear fluid out all four corners.
Nice evening shakedown drive... Brakes feel great.
A little rubbing from the Style 8's on the rear, but I expected that. I'll roll the fenders this week.
One of the caps for the style 8's is beyond repair, I'm afraid. Now on the lookout for one. Anyone got a good one for sale?
