No, those are the regular exhaust manifolds. The non-original element is subtle in that most would overlook it completely since it is so common on what most people know of as M30 engines...especially *all* of the injected M30 engines sold, at least those sold stateside. (it's not emissions related in anyway).slammin_e28 wrote:It doesn't have those stupid thermal reactors does it?CSBM5 wrote:By the way, can anyone spot the likely non-originality element on the BMW Museum's M30 above?

Bingo! All early M30s to my knowledge, early meaning double Zenith M30s (i.e. E3, E9) had a 5 blade fan with a friction fan clutch (that sucked). This engine is sporting a 9 blade fan with a viscous clutch which didn't appear here in the states until the 530i/3.0Si circa 1975. Perhaps in Europe it was something that was still used on carb'd M30s too after they were gone here in the USA, so I'm out of line on this too...OcCoupe wrote:The fan is black and has 8 blades instead of red with 5 blades?CSBM5 wrote:By the way, can anyone spot the likely non-originality element on the BMW Museum's M30 above?

Mr. OCD coupe. Absolutely stunning.
Mike in Seattle, I like that blue. It would be a good contrast to my alpine and go with my blue pinstripe.
M30's? Yeah I got 'em. I can make it rain m30's.
My 88 after I picked it up.
And After some cleaning. Today it has an AFM cover and the b35 style wire cover.
And I snagged this recently. It's going to get matched up with the g265 from my '85. I'm excited to do the work, and can't wait for the final result.
Bonus m30 from my 85 on the the stand in the background. Just waiting to figure out what I want to do with it.
And a couple of shots of it opened up. Pretty happy.

Not spotless, but still clean for a driver.
