Main post updated with list of those who said they will buy.

I'm personally excited to have mine zinc/cad plated. Because I'll be having someone other than eMachineShop do the plating, it will be easy for me to just leave a few out for those of you who don't want plating.

I mocked up another sample in cardboard and discovered I'd missed something pretty critical: The hole in the bock is offset to the front of the engine 4mm from the centerline of the intake manifold. I never noticed this on the original bracket before, but if you look carefully you can see it's asymmetric! I just thought with my previous cardboard mock that I had bent the cardboard cockeyed. This time I was as precise as cardboard allows and it made it obvious.

Other than that my latest design fits nicely. I'll be touching up the design to fix this today and will do one more cardboard mock.

I probably need one too. I have a b35 intake mounted to a port matched b34 head.

I'll take one (bare) too so I can un-hackify my setup.

Keep 'em coming folks. At this rate I'll be able to quit my day job AND still be able to pay for my kids' college education!

I'm hoping to submit the order tomorrow after one last cardboard mockup... My goal now is to have them in hand for 5erWest so any of you who will be there will get them handed over personally.

I have finalized the design and submitted an order for a prototype unit. Originally I was just going to order 10 or so and risk the part being slightly 'wrong' knowing I could manually file or bend things to make it 'right' if needed. But now that there are almost 25 people who have expressed interest in buying them I do not want to risk that. The per-unit price has gone down as the quantity has gone up and as I've figured out the 3D CAD tool and refined the design, so the additional expense of having two orders means the final price for you all will still be somewhere near $30 + shipping.

eMachineShop.com says the part will be here 7/16. I'm sorta surprised it will take so long, but it is what it is. I'll be on pins & needles waiting for it :-). This, of course, means that I will not be able to deliver them to people at 5erWest. :-(

Here's the 3D rendering of the design I submitted:

If I wanted one in corrugated cardboard, could I pick that up at 5erWest?

;)

Just checked status of my order. The prototype is still due 7/16.

If it fits perfectly like I expect it to (!) then, best case, I'll have the rest (I'm currently planning on ordering 50) by 8/1.

All 'orders' are being tracked in first post of this thread. There I've indicated who, how many, and bare if that's what was requested. Please check there to make sure I got it right.

PM sent a little while ago - my name is on the list twice. I only need one, and will take it with whatever coating you go for. Thanks!

I'm curious as to why the bracket shown in the second picture in this thread is not completely sufficient for its intended purpose? Looks stronger than what you mocked up as well, since its a straight piece of C-channel versus a bent piece of flat bar. I have had the B34 piece on my B35 manifold for years with no issues.

Frankly, I don't know.

What I do know is that on B34s, the BMW engineers saw the need to provide two steel support bars up above, I addition to that small lower bracket. Then, on the B35, they got rid of the top supports and provided the very beefy cast aluminum support below.

My bracket, made of 1/8" steel will be far stronger than the thinner B34 lower support. I have attempted to fabricate it such that it directly replaces the cast aluminum part, but using steel.

I can only speculate why BMW choose to engineer such robust support. Metal fatigue from vibration? Protection against attempts to lift engine by intake? Who knows. It is likely over-engineered. I like that, and want my b35 to be as robustly engineered.

I'll post pics & results asap!

The prototype was home when I got back from DC yesterday.

This is why you make prototypes.

The angles are perfect, but I they made the bends in the wrong direction thus the offset is reversed. I'm pretty sure this is their mistake. I'm also not happy with the amount of overhang at the top. I will be making those tangs not stick out so much by making the distance between the bends slightly shorter. The strength of the bracket is exactly as I expected. The 1/8" steel is hefty. The machining work is high quality. These will turn out great!

Quick update:

I submitted an updated design today. It turns out that the fact they bent it backwards WAS their fault. I didn't provide machinist notes indicating the part was asymmetric and they just assumed it was. They should have machined it precisely to my specifications which called for bends in a specific direction. Anyway, the good news is they are taking care of it and I got to tweak the design a little bit as well.

I'm hoping they'll expedite this second prototype order. As of now I won't get the part until 8/4.

I also figured out how to setup a little e-commerce page to handle orders using Amazon's checkout services (Checkout By Amazon). It literally took me 30 minutes and I have a page that will let you pick whether you want bare metal or zinc and quantity. You can then pay using your Amazon account. Once I have the parts in hand I will post up the link and start taking orders. I don't want to collect any money until I'm 100% sure the parts will work.
