Greg, it's a little bit late at the moment, but when you do the next FI project, you need this: http://www.jandssafeguard.com. Cheap insurance.
Right, knock sensor. All OBDII cars have knock sensors, NA or FI. Dinan installed knock sensors in all there cars, whether in house units or J&S sensors.

My 87' Thunderbird Tcoupe had a factory knock sensor so I am not unfamiliar with them. Yes I believe it is a worthwhile investment. When I do the Haltech (no knock sensing ??unfortunately) I will figure something out. It has a number of auxilliary inputs so maybe I can trick it into working with some kind of knock control. Lots of ideas here. Probably too many.
Please elaborate. Sounds interesting.Sweeney wrote:I used a SAAB APC system from a 900 Turbo to control knock. It's a stand alone system that is easy to adapt to any engine and it can be tuned. It reduces boost at the onset of knock.
I've already found how someone has used a GM knock controller with the Haltech to retard timing but haven't been able to dig up the details yet.
Also lots of people are datalogging detonation with Haltechs but can't do anything to control it. That's not good enough to me.
J&S and MSD both have nice units but they won't allow me to run full sequential timing on a 6 cylinder so I am disappointed as that is part of my plan. I don't want to run 2 units but that would be an option except I think it's not acceptable to spend that much money on this 1 item. I don't want a $ 20,000 M30. It defeats my original intentions and quite honestly is out of my financial means. The Haltech was FREE (well sort of, let's say barter) otherwise I'd have assembled a MS.
I want to do this on an acceptable but minimum budget and backdoor tricks (such as the SAAB APC system, thanks Sweeney) are the kind of things we need to share around here more.
Back on track. It looks like the motor situation is resolved. I should have the car running again around New Years. I think I'll find one of these SAAB systems and try to get it on the car for this event. What parts do I need and from what years and models SAAB can they be found?
Thanks.
I had looked into for another car at one point. There are a few good links and people who have installed and/or tweaked the units for better performance.

Not true - the 745 (M102/M106) had two knock sensors installed by BMW. That is another reason to go with a M106 block for the ultimate M30 turbo build. I has two bosses for knock sensors that protrude into the water jacket of the block.turbodan wrote:BMW didnt install knock sensors until the M50 series motors. M30s and M20s have no sensors and obviously no electronics to support them.
Bellow is a picture of the TEC3 knock sensor I installed in the M106 block. It proved to be VERY sensitive. See my web page for more pictures.

Somebody on here used to have a part in thier signature about oddball euro cars that should never be over here in the first place, and how the above information does not apply to these grey market imported freaks. Thats what I'm saying.

Sorry to hear about your motor man. I have been running 9 lbs of boost around Atlanta for 6 months without any issues. I have been very careful and very concious of my tune and my engine temperatures.
If you can get a good base tune that is consistant, you won't have to worry about knocking unless you have other issues. An injector misfiring should have shown up on a wideband as a rich spike.
What type of Haltech are you thinking about? E6X?

I was running 15lbs. It took at least 9 lbs to get the FMU working properly. Was pig rich prior to that at 7 lbs. I made a shim for the .5 bar spring and that got me a solid 9-10 lbs before I put the 1 bar spring in.Maddog wrote:Sorry to hear about your motor man. I have an E11V2. I am not installing it soon however as life has gotten in the way. I won't even be home to install my new motor (thanks TCD) until February. My goal is to use the auxillary outputs of the unit to keep the OBC functions accurate and working. No promises just part of the plan.
