George, George ?????
From ........
Hey how are things in the Seacoast, I just joined
E28 today and your 5er was the 1st I looked at..
Then I saw the pics. of the house in the background.....and could not believe it
I rented Diane's house for the Winter 98' before moving to Germany , had the yellow 76' 3.0 Carrera
Living in Leipzig now, former DDR...and still playing with Porsche's and BMW's.
I was in the states for MD weekend and actually drove 1A but there was no signs of life at your house...wanted to see what was in your Garage.......
I still have 3 toys sitting in Portsmouth at Heritage storage
Black 84' Carrera w M491 opt. 45K, 2 owner,
pristine
Tangerine 70' 911T with a "pupose built" 2.7 Euro spec "S" 205 hp, 2 owner, mid-ohio car, with window sticker an ALL service docs from day one
Rossa Red 79' 308 Dino GT4....same docs...
was Wendy Garthwaites car...Dad was ALGAR Ferrari in PA.
A few set of wheels here in Germany ass swell
But one you might specifically fall down for....
Bought it "new" March 2009
2009 LR Defender 110 " SVX" Edition
1,800 total production build only 150 units came to Germany, and half of those were exported for Big $$$ to Asia...
Black/ Black Roof/ Blacked out Glass / Black Recaro interior
I will send you some Pics.....
Send me your Email address....
Should be in the Seacoast for a few Day in Sept. We should hook-up

Hey Chaz!
Yup, it's me! Small world, huh....
Your D110 sounds nice......mmmm, Recaro interior!! My back feels the pain I've inflicted upon it with my stock seats every day!! Hahaha!! That's one of the reasons I bought the S8....comfortable winter driving!!
Other than the S8, nothing has changed in my garage. Still have the '85 M635, '77 Carrera 3.0, and my '95 D90 torture device (300,000 painful miles!!). It breaks my heart to sell the E28, but I just don't have the room for it. Right now I'm parking it in my shop at the back of the garage...which prevents me from using the Bridgeport milling machine I bought a few months ago.
Your toys sound pretty cool too! I'll send you my email....send me some pics of everything!
See ya!
-George
PS I'm not sure how it works around here, but if you can edit out my street address in your post, I'd appreciate it!!! Thanks!

Hi George no worrys..
They still have to figure out the State and then the Town....sorry for that...but i think you are okay.
Great to hear from you, send me your email and I will send you some Pics....
My German Wife hates absolutely "HATES" the 110....................she thinks it is the most stupid auto on the Planet..to loud, cold in the Winter and too slow on the Autobahn....
But Defenders are suppossed to be crawlers not speed machines.... I comfortably do 135 km, in 6th gear with tach reading 2400 RPM.....
The Defender is my primary transportation around the city..."Soccer Dad"..it works for me..
Anyhow, I bought her an 09' VW Touareg "R-Line" package 20" wheels 3.0 V6 Deisel, Air suspension, 240 ps and super on the Autobahn cruising at 210 km..
So thats the family work-horse, the Cayenne which is built here in Leipzig is another 20,000 Euro.... so we went VW, practically the same ride.....
Loved the Pics on your 5er' and wish you much success on the sale, I have to many "phillys" in the stable rite now or I would be knocking at your door.......hope you are happy with the A8
Great technology, but expensive to service if you have a problem...and it will not put
" that silly grin" on your face in the Drivers seat
Look forward to hoefully see you in September
stay healthy, keep both feet in it....
"In warm and out hot "
I might be at LimeRock for LD weekend, have plans ????
Auf Wiedersehen

Thought I'd chime in here . . . and add a bit about George's
E28 S50 B30 . . .
FWIW, I drive a lightened E28 M5 . . and have run my M5 against George's car on the interstate. It is faster by a huge amount !!! from 30 -100 mph, no matter what gear . . . !!!
Standing starts, roll ons . .. we didn't try burnouts . . . .
I'm certain the M5 will have a higher top end, as the gearing on the transmissions varies. At higher speeds the M5 could almost hold it's own.
The car George started with came from down south, there are no rust issues, the dash is a recent replacement taken from a prominent MYE28 members show car. It is crack free and came out of a low mileage always garaged car.
All the bumpers, Euro fender flares were all installed by my shop,
www.VSR1.com and all parts were new.
The engine came out of a one of my customers 1995 E36 M3s, set up with Schrick cams and a 3.5" Euro MAF. This engine was extremely well cared for before and we have only used Redline 10w-40 oil in it. We dynoed the engine in the E36 just before we pulled it, and it made 263 RWHP on a Dyno Jet with the same gear box.
George has replaced virtually every moving part on this car. It is well sorted and shouldn't have any issues.
I'll add that this conversion is no where near as easy as the same into an E30 chassis. The E28 transmission tunnel is smaller, leaving very little room for the tall bellhousing. Motor mount arms are totally hand built. No we did not make drawings! The car uses the stock E28 fuel delivery system, the ECU is mounted in the same location. The only challenge we had was matching the coolant temp to the stock E28 dash cluster, and finally added an Autometer gage to solve the problem.
The exhaust on this car is a VSR M5 Dual Cat Center Section with custom hand built connectors to the S52 headers. The S50 cast steel headers were discarded to make space and save weight.
The only item I would change is the B&B . . with only metallic cats and the small B&B resonators, it is loud. But no where close to as loud as George's other toys! As I recall this is an M5 B&B, larger than the E28 535i B&B.
To the fortunate person to buy this car, it's fast, more responsive than and M5 or a Dinan 535 with a 3.8 . . .
It's a unique car, and not for everyone!!!

I have to chime in......If I had $15k, I would buy that car in a blink of an eye! That is my dream car. Modern engine (M3 is perfect motor when considering cost of maintenance, etc.) with the feel and driving characteristics of the e28. Would give multiple body parts for that car. Price is right. Sure I would love to buy it for less and it is probably at its limit for price, it is still reasonable and hard to duplicate for that money. GLWS, if I win lottery this week, I am in. Cross your fingers for me, because that is the car! Love it, by the way does the A/C work?

Nice e28, love the S50 conversion. With the US bumpers removed this car probably weighs close to an e36 M3 (appx 3100 lbs) so acceleration wise it should be close to e36 M3 which means 14.0 sec/100 mph quarter mile. To get that out of an M30 you would need to spend $$ on cam, head work headers etc. or do a TCD turbo.
Agree on A8/S8 reliability but is the E38 7 series any better? Plus the OP likely needs AWD for NH winters.
GLWS!

Dhemcjgu......oops, I'm trying to type with my fingers crossed, but it just ain't workin'!! Sorry 'bout that carnutdallas!!
You're right GregCT, AWD for the NH winter!! The S8 is already proving to be the ultimate daily driver for me, and once I get a set of snows, the awesomeness will continue through the winter!!! I'm sure the 7 series is a great car, but it (and others I've considered) lack one major thing that I love to have in my cars....they have to be uncommon. I'm most definitely not saying that in a snobby way.....I hope you all believe me....but I like my cars to be a little out of the ordinary. Rare / gray market / special editions. Not necessarily expensive, just uncommon. I've been driving for 30 years and I've always felt that way. Don't know why... although I'm sure a psychiatrist could shed some light on it!!! But it's not snobbery or a big ego.....far from it.
And now that I'm confessing to all of you...there's something else: I like to touch my cars!! Rub the fenders, touch th........oh crap, I've gone too far!! I'm not telling you any more!!

In case anybody is interested, I'm having VSR repair the torn left side thigh bolster on the drivers seat. They ordered new leather for it and it should be repaired shortly.

That is one seriously cool ride man and the price is about right. You get an e30 speed with an e28 4dr practicality. I wonder what is like as a daily driver. I definatly hope it finds a good home if I had a garage and were closer to you I would definatly snatch this up. But driving this as DD on the streets and winters of NYC feels like a crime.
Posted: Oct 17, 2010 9:05 AM
by NHM635CSI
Yeah, maybe it wouldn't do so well as a DD in NYC!! Around here though (NH) it was perfect. Well, except in the winter!! The rest of the year it was a blast though!!

The seat will be repaired next week. I hope it gets done fast, it's gonna suck driving it around while sitting on a milk crate!

Man after being on this site for a month or two I realized that the only car that sells here is if it's 90% new and 80%off.

No kidding!! It's too bad because I want this car to go to a good home.....to someone who would appreciate a car like this.....like a member of mye28. I also have ads in the BMWCCA classifieds and Bimmerforums. I don't exactly want to try ebay because I don't have much experience with it, but I just might now that a friend has offered to help (I've only bought a few machine tools and have never sold anything).
At least it's not like I have to sell it to raise cash or something. It's just a pain in the ass to move it out of my shop when I need the space for a project...and then move it back in at the end of each day. My patience hasn't worn out yet, so all is still good!!

Have a great 4th everybody!!!
This car rocks. I cry a little that you ditched a cardinal red interior (my favorite, at least on white or salmon silver cars) for boring pearl beige, but to each his own.
Everyone has weighed in on pricing. I won't say what I think the car is worth, because it really has no equal in the market so it's a tough call. All of these unique conversions are tough to sell even though they can represent a truly great marriage of modern dynamics with more vintage aesthetics.
I'll offer a couple of examples to give an idea, though. Many people here might remember Eric Knowles's E34 Touring: M5 body kit, supercharged S50 installed, pristine black leather/cloth M-stripe interior. It was advertised originally at $25k, and before I bought Adam Wilson's M30B35-powered 5-speed Touring (for just over 1/3 of what Adam spent building it), the asking price had fallen to $18k--a little above where you are now. Several months later, Eric was e-mailing me and telling me the price had dropped to $13k. It was last seen at a consignment shop that bought it from Eric and marked it back up to $20k. :-/ Granted, this was in the worst of the economic well, around December 2008, so a tough market for a highly modded wagon.
Another example is Terry Sayther's S52-powered E34 Touring, selling at about the same time for $10.5k asking. It got no hits, and Terry laughed at me when I offered him $8k for the car (really, it was quite rude, considering the car had been for sale for several months, was filthy, and had some major interior issues--Adam's car was a much better buy in the end). I know that car sat for quite a while longer.
HOWEVER: my advice is, if you can spare the time and space, to sit on it and wait for a buyer to come to you. This car is an ideal candidate for a fast daily driver, and a Schrick-cammed S50 should be putting down over 250whp. A dyno sheet would be great. I think this is the sort of car that someone who wants to do some track events would be very wise to pick up. The S50 is a bulletproof motor on the track (provided you don't mis-shift it and you have the oil pump nut properly secured!), power is linear, and it weighs the same as an M20 in the nose--better handling than a stock 535i. The car looks great, too, and it's unique configuration will be fun to talk about.
Good luck with the sale.

Hi Tammer!
Sorry I got rid of the old interior!! If I had given it to you though, I would've forced you to take those horrible wood overlays the previous owner had all over the dash!!! Hahaha!!! Would you have done it??
Anyway, thanks for the input!! I realize that I'm going to have to wait it out....but it's tough....I bought an old Bridgeport milling machine several months ago and can't really use it! The 535 has to sit in my shop and I can't get at the Bridgeport unless I move the car out into the driveway.
Plus the fact that it's gone from a daily driver to a toy means that it has to compete with my '85 M635 and '77 Carrera 3.0 for driving time. There's only so much time in a day, know what I mean?? And with another NH winter fast approaching, there will be even less time to drive these cars.
In reality though, I know that your advice is correct and I'll just have to wait for the right buyer to come to me. Luckily, I'm not forced to sell for financial reasons and can do this. I just want to sell it to someone who will appreciate and love it like I do.
Thanks for taking the time to give me your opinions!!! I definitely appreciate it!!

No thanks! I had my own (very good) cardinal red interior and I sold it to a member of this board when I parted out that car.

Hi Tammer-
pictures???
Hahaha......I am so far behind the times when it comes to knowing how to post pics on forums like this or emails it's not even funny!!! I had such a hard time trying to post these pics in this ad that I had to ask a Beamter to help me!!! Thanks again Justin!!! Hahaha, sad, isn't it??!!!! And here's another example of my technological incompetence: Mario Langsten said he'd create an ad and put it on his website (vsr1.com) for me and asked me to email him the pics. Well, I tried for an hour and couldn't figure out how to get more than one picture in each attachment. So, instead of sending him 50 emails, I just burned the pics to a cd and will drive the 100 mile round trip to get the pics to him!!! Like I said above...sad, isn't it!!!
So, I'm sorry Tammer, I don't think you'll be seeing any pics of my M101 trailer!!!
As for your buddy looking for a track car...tell him about the ad!!! I'll pay a finders fee to anybody who can help me get this car to a good home! As long as I'm guaranteed visitation rights!!
-George
PS If you really want to see the trailer, I'll try to figure out how to post the pics for you!!

Beautiful car. Two questions: first, someone above asked about the air conditioning, if it worked etc. If you answered, I didn't catch it. I'm newly moved to LA and so as a DD I'd need to know the situation there. Second, perhaps you, your mechanic or someone on the board here could weigh in on the car's ability to pass CA smog inspection. I'm guessing that it would, but...
Thanks

OK, sorry, engaged keyboard prior to research. Looks like (from VSR's site) Mario's E30 exhaust product is off-road use only, but that caveat is not present for the 5 series. I'd like to assume that it's good to go out here, but unfortunately, cannot. Any confirmation would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi syrfr-
I'll ask Mario his opinion on the CA smog question. I'll post the answer here as soon as I hear back from him. The car has cats, and the exhaust is VSR's M5 center section, not the one for the e30. Check out Marios post back on page 2 of this thread....he mentions it there. Hope that helps a little!
The ac works fine.
Thanks for the interest!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for all parts and labor on the engine? I know I can get an s50/s52 for about $2000 with tranny, but what did it cost for everything else that had to do with the swap?

He had the work done by a pretty pricey mechanic, so it wouldn't be the best comparison to what you want to do.
