Ok...I just weighed my box. I didn't want to mess with taking out the sub which weighs about 6 pounds or so. So....the unloaded box weighs about 28 pounds shipped from 97220.

Thanks dood! I appreciate the business. Did you reglue that center dust cap?? That's what was rattling. Mine was loose, glued it back in place, no rattles. Clean bass.austin8753 wrote:For an E28 box, Luke charges $250, you have to have at least 4 orders in to make it worth his while and they wouldn't be ready 'til well into summer. I'm not hating on the guy at all; he makes a sweet box, but I think this is a better solution to my needs. Plus, I like supporting a local business!skip535i wrote:I have a box that does JUST this for my E34...there is a guy building them for people on bf.c and r3v.podgorny wrote:podgorny wrote:If you want to cut a hole into the cabin, I'd think the best choice would be to build a compound enclosure that vents into the area behind the rear armrest.
Still thinking about this. Surely someone has built a system that uses the trunk as the sealed chamber and ports into the cabin.
Jeff, thanks again!
I haven't messed with it much. I have some other rattles that I need to locate and tweak with the amp settings. New amp may be coming soon if I can't get it to sound better. Project for the weekend!ilikemybike wrote:Thanks dood! I appreciate the business. Did you reglue that center dust cap?? That's what was rattling. Mine was loose, glued it back in place, no rattles. what i dont like on the "sub under rear seat is that the box is way tooo small and wont reproduce great sound in that little ass box. and you will be missing out on alot of quality bass. the OP's Idea is awesome on the other handthrty8street wrote:

Better yet, is there a DIY on how to construct a fiberglass box for under the seat?
Incorrect, and I seriously doubt you've even heard a decent shallow mount sub let alone installed one. You won't win any volume competitions, but man do these things hit all of the notes.rojacob wrote:what i dont like on the "sub under rear seat is that the box is way tooo small and wont reproduce great sound in that little ass box. and you will be missing out on alot of quality bass. the OP's Idea is awesome on the other handthrty8street wrote:

So I guess it is true: imitation is the most sincere form of flattery...so thanks! Uhhhh....who are you? I only know of you from an offhand comment last week by a friend who says you build boxes, charge accordingly, and have a reputation as an ass. Building subwoofer enclosures to fit in a particular spot and look as though they are not there is nothing new. Imitate you? Puuuhleeeze! I have been wanting to do this before ever hearing of you.Stereoinstaller1 wrote:So I guess it is true: imitation is the most sincere form of flattery...so thanks! I will have a few E34s at 5er West, mine included. I would be honored for you to stop by, take a listen. Mine will not have much of a system, the goal is to have the entire system able to be replicated for $500, including one of my boxes.
Make sure you hear the E28 I did for James Crivellone at 5er, too. The box for that install is of course far more complex: the face is stepped to fit that metal brace across the floor of the E28, the woofer is properly recessed, it is ported into the cabin, and the output of the box from both ports and the woofer is sealed into the cabin, so there are no rattles anywhere.
It also has a full car PC install, and active tri-amped 5.1 true surround sound, with a full active tri-amped center channel!
When you hear the detail and clarity of the bass in that car, you will understand why I do things the way I do.
As far as what you are doing, I really am happy for you. I hope you stay busy, and I hope you learn more tricks along the way. In fact, let me offer my help! If you get stuck on something, just hit me up on Facebook at German Audio Specialties, or on (one of) my site(s), www.germanaudiospecialties.com.
(Yes, that too is still under construction, but I am up to my eyeballs in work. I can't even begin to keep up.)
The more people you introduce to the idea of a custom fit box, the more customers I will have available, right? Those who don't want to pay for the level of engineering and construction of mine would do well to go to you rather than Car Toys, right?
I have basically no intention of ever producing an E28 box. I have shipped well over 200 E30 and E34 boxes now, apparently they are kind of legendary. People come to me when they want the absolute best in fitment and sound quality.
I do my best to please them, believe me.
When you hear one and see how they fit, you will understand all the extra work that go into mine. The goal for me is to offer the best SQ, the most logical use of space and the best value on the market. I hope you are as proud of your work as I am of mine.

Couple of pics:
Here is an E30 trunk with a E3010 box, a 5 channel PPI amp and a simple "pretty panel"
Here is a box I custom built for a guy in LA. He will be using the Image Dynamics IDMax 12" woofer, this box is vehicle and woofer specific. He will be handling the cosmetic part of things, but it will be at Bimmerfest this weekend:
All of the odd shapes on the front panel are to force the box to seal into the cabin, again, this sounds much better and eliminates 99% of all rattles. The ports will be through the rear deck, and again, sealed into the cabin. The crappy carpet job is only a gasket and is not visible when installed, but getting the carpet and the foam gasket to fit the car perfectly was more important.
Quick note: the woofer shown is NOT the one this box is intended for, but only to show how the box looks with the woofer installed.
Yes, the face of the woofer is vertical. The mouting depth on this beast of a woofer is so deep that you cannot angle it with the seat back, to make it fit into the ski pass location you would have to cut a hole in the floor of the trunk!
The porting is dual 4", over twice the port area typically used in a 12" box. This means far far more engineering and far more work, but all for a great cause: the most stunning bass at BimmerFest.
Here is a simple idea of how the porting works. Of course, I have a standard method of sealing the ports into the rear deck and into the box, but I won't bore you guys with those details.
I think Dexter aimed that at Mr. Stereoinstaller1. He's a buyin' one of my boxes.ElGuappo wrote:re-pwned
I agree with you on the fact its just music. Thats why i have only one sub. Thats all i need; im not like people around me who have 2 15“s and think its hot....your just ketting people know you have something worth steeling.TucciRW wrote:Incorrect, and I seriously doubt you've even heard a decent shallow mount sub let alone installed one. I would take a shallow mount sub that can fit underneath my rear seat and even allow someone to sit on it, than take up a third of my trunk space for an obnoxiously large sub that is not necessary for the speakers that are contained in the average person's car. It's music, not a "who can wake the neighbors up" contest.
my $.02
