What would happen if we started nitpicking little things like,
using your "SHIFT" key at the appropriate times?
Would that bother you at all?

Good luck, dude. My recommendation is to look for a B35 swapped 535i that already has some suspension mods, that would be a perfect start if you want a "track-able" daily driver.
Although Ali has the quote of the thread the M30B35 swapped E28 is probably my favorite piece of real advice. The B35 variant of the M30 has 208hp as opposed to 182hp in the B34 version used in the E28 from '85-'88. The B35 is also a smoother engine.

There are those that would say the B34 is more appropriate for F/I applications though. Something to consider if the OP is considering the turbo route.

i'm more of a nader guy myself.

i would probably rule out turbo just due to the sheer expense is all. boost makes me happy though

I should have included this in my original post, but the B34 is more feasible for use with a turbo.

It's feasible that I've had relations with Ralph Nader. And it wasn't Angry Birds.

Why is that? Simply the lower compression?

Late B35 blocks are prone to cracking.

No. B35 never came in the e28. Late e24, e34, and e32 got the B35.

There was a Euro, high compression B34.....but may as well just get a B35, easier to come by, IMO.

I thought it was the head casting that was prone to cracking? Not as bad as the e12 stuff, but much more prone to cracking than the b34 for whatever reason. The blocks (to my understanding) are just as robust as any other m30 block.

Nope. Paul Burke went through 3 (or maybe more) B35 blocks when he was looking for a good one for cvillebimmer. X rays showed cracking. George's 535i B35 block cracked, too, and that was without FI. According to PB, the 88 castings are good (the ones that are compatible with the E24/28) but the later ones are no good.

No, the B35 was never a stock motor in an E28 anywhere. It was used in E34s, E32s, and E24s and was the final swan song for BMW's infamous M30 engine when it was retired in 1994. The easiest conversion can be done with an early E34 motor or an E24 one as they should have the correct mounting points to bolt straight onto the E28. However somewhere there's a bracket you can buy to make all of them fit.

There's also this super awesome thread on the topic over in Tech Talk:
