There is a specific procedure they have to follow with the automatics. This is why.

found this horn button for ~$20 on amazon, my momo horn button that came with the car was damaged, also swapped out my ICV for an extra one I had. the ICV in the car read fine on the multimeter, but wasnt working.

eventually, i'd love to replace the momo comp wheel that came with the car with a momo prototipo or something else in similar fashion.

Bought a new Duralast Gold battery . But I think I might need an alternator too.

A few minor touch-ups and the second half will be complete.

Went to junk yard and found some goddies for the e28.

Replaced the fuse box cover with a brand new one; what a difference!!

Changed engine thermostat - hoping for a more stable engine temperature..

Found a almost new 205/60/15 tire at junk yard for $18

Replaced the oil cooler lines which was the easy part. The real fun was cleaning up 500 miles of oil spray.

That's a well known quirk they have. And avoidable. The guys in Cali know better and there is an exemption for them. They are paying for a new tranny aren't they?

Subject: Transmission Failure during Exhaust Emission Testing

Models: All 1984, 1985, 1986 with 4-speed automatic transmission, 1987 635CSi, 735i, and L7.

Situation: There have been reported isolated cases of automatic transmissions failing during a High Idle Exhaust Emissions Check. The failures have resulted from a preconditioning procedure where the engine is held at high rpm for a prolonged period of time. The following applies to all states which have a High Idle Exhaust Emission Check.

As the internal transmission components experience normal wear over time, the possibility of transmission damage exists if the vehicle is operated for extended periods of time at high rpm in PARK or Neutral. Such operation does not constitute normal operating conditions. If, in exceptional cases such as A/C recharging, injector cleaning, charging system tests, or emissions testing, vehicle operation at high rpm in PARK or Neutral is required the following setup procedure must be performed prior to beginning such operations.

Solution: The emissions test must be conducted with the engine at operating temperature. If the engine is not at operating temperature prior to beginning the test, it is recommended that the vehicle be driven for a short period of time to bring the engine to operating temperature. DO NOT run the vehicle at high idle to achieve operating temperature.

Once the engine has reached operating temperature, the following pretest procedure must be performed BEFORE testing begins.

Setup Procedure for I/M Emission Test

1. Shift to PARK.
2. Turn engine OFF.
3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
4. Restart engine, LEAVE TRANSMISSION IN PARK.
After the engine is started, DO NOT move the gear shift selector through the Forward or Reverse gears before or during the test sequence. DO NOT EXCEED 2000 RPM.
5. Begin emissions test procedure.
6. If the vehicle fails the emission test, some states allow for an extended pre-conditioning before the repeat test. In this case the following procedure should be adhered to.

Precondition Procedure

1. Shift into PARK and turn the engine OFF for 30 seconds.
2. Restart engine, LEAVE TRANSMISSION IN PARK.
3. Engine may be preconditioned at a maximum of 2000 RPM for up to 90 seconds, at which time the repeat test must begin.

If the above steps are not followed, serious transmission damage can result.

Note: Due to the unusual nature of the emissions check, this type of failure does not take place under normal operating conditions.

I contacted Jiffy Lube International that same day and the next day my car was on a tow truck headed for a repair shop. I was contacted via email by the Jiffy Lube owner ( Griffin Fast Lube LLC ) out of Utah. They seemed so eager to resolve the issue at first with thier quick response. But wait , not so fast . Once the repair shop inspected the damage , they stated due to the milege of the vehicle Jiffy lube was only going to pay for $600 of the total $2,500 cost. Keep in mind this is a one owner , 135,000 orig mile , garaged , perfect 1984 528e. There's no way I'm( essentially) paying $600 for a smog check. So < as soon as I finish my coffee I'm going down to the shop and punch Jesse in the mouth.

Let them know you're talking to the state about how well they follow procedures.

Then punch him in the mouth.

Just don't ever go to Jiffy Lube , ever , for anything. The State Emissions lab is right next door to the DMV in Sparks ,NV. They just laughed. Stay informed , be aware , and good luck. All I wanted to do was get a smog check on a car that would surely pass (and it did) . But it was a Sunday morning and they were the only ones open.
