Ordered a new set of motor mounts and rubber shifter stop... Got the old bird up on ramps to get ready to get down and dirty. Gotta fix the shifter console, what an enigma... So many different options, parts and pieces, all mashed between the body and the driveshaft... AUGH @_@

Wiper linkage was squealing horribly, so I took both the linkage and motor fully apart, put new brushes in the wiper motor and cleaned off the 20+ year old grease and put some new stuff in. Wipers are really quick and quiet as a church mouse.

I drove it to work like I always do. But this time I unplugged the thermotime switch before starting it cold. It started without stalling... Hmmm.

Had to make this little wire harness to allow the miller maf to plug in without straining the chassis harness. Definitely not the "fast" installation they advertise in the instruction manual...

Started stripping the chipped up "Emo-Black" off the Style 29's I got.
Couldn't get it all off by the time I ran out of stripper and called it for the day.
Still crappy up close but it looks so much better already! I don't get the Batman thing with the black wheel paint.

Went to the junkyard hoping to score a couple of bits to replace some broken ones on my car, but the poor e28 they had there had been stripped nearly to its bones. Hardly anything left but the shell and the carpet. The carpet was (as in used to be) black, was slightly tempting, but I figure it'd be just as easy to dye my own carpet black as that one, which had faded to an old-lady blue/gray. I guess I'll have to order some new inside door handles.

No need for a JY for me. I just need to find the right bucket in the shed. I found 2 sets of rear calipers, Then I found the Syl glyde. The caliper was stuck and I sheared the bleeder. I chose a right rear caliper with a good bleeder. I spun it onto the brake hose and bled it. Then I pumped the brakes until the puck extended out of the dust cover. Then I took off the caliper and put it in a vise . The puck came out with ease. It was in great shape. The bottom of the bore was rusty, I used a screwdriver to loosen the scale. and I sluiced it out with some brake fluid. I wiped out the bore and checked the seal, perfect. This is where the Syl glyde is used. every surface in everything is coated with it. The puck is fiddled and tapped so I can get a 4'' C clamp in place. The puck gets past the dust cover and the C clamp is barely needed. I use a brass brush on the slide bolts to clean off the crud . More Sylglyde. I found a wear sensor and got a gravity bleed going. . Then , I rigged the air lock to the bleeder and pumped about an ounce of fluid into a hot sauce bottle. The RR was the broken side. and now its fixed . It is still on blocks. I found a nail in the tread . Dusk fell, my feet were cold and B6II isnt needed , so I'll finish in the morning and maybe then , I'll do the other side. There is a sticky RR brake on the Rat but I suspect a bad E brake cable. So that is gonna wait until after I get it inspected.

Just finished!
Good lord. I have to completely re-learn how to drive the car. The engagement point is right in the middle of the pedal stroke, instead of the last .5 inch!
I installed the overcenter spring as-is right out of the box, just tightened the jam-nut, seems to be perfect. Went ahead and installed Dave's reinforcement bracket. I don't ever want to replace another pb.. ever.

I have properly functioning heat now. After the B35 swap I never connected the vacuum line for the interior air temp sensor.
Finally got tired of air from hell and got a Y vacuum connector and fixed that, then connected the sensor and everything and..... it works!
Such a little thing made me so happy, lol.
No to tackle the cruise I never bothered with after the 5sp swap.....

Snob got a new-to-her p/s pump last night.
Another swap, compliments of the s-n-l who she is still on loan to.
I even offered to help, but he said, "nope, I got it".

Just dropped off the head of my '88 528e at Jerry's Broken Tap and Drill Removal in Santa Ana, CA. One of the little 6mm coolant passage bolts in the back of the head broke off...then I broke an ez out in the broken bolt...
I saw a 12 cylinder Lamborghini Block being repaired so I thought my lowly M20 cylinder head was in good company.

Finally fixed the OBC light bar, feels good to be able to see how late I am for work.
Replaced the rear defrost switch, bulb was out when you pushed it in, and that seemed to correlate with the grid not working.
We'll see.
Edit: Forgot to add this:
One down, two more to go.

My dad and I just discovered that the crank hub nut was loose. I felt and gave it a twist CCW. It felt like there was less than 30 lbs.-ft. of torque on it. That could explain the ringing noise - Washer (?) behind the crank nut must've been going back and forth. There was play on the crank hub, both rotational and forwards & backwards. I'm not going to drive it until we get it fixed, so we've decided that I get to use the family's early '00 A4 1.8T for school.
Other than that, there's not much else mechanically to do to the car.
On a side note, I was able to pull up the VINs for both an '88 M5 and an '88 M6; probably should throw that up onto the M registry.

I picked my e28 up from Fortune Auto in Richmond VA yesterday where they installed their Broadway Static coilovers on it.
Spent a couple hours in the shop today working on the fenders and playing around with ride height. Still have a little bit of work to do getting everything dialed in just right but I'm pretty happy so far.

This didn't happen, but the p/s pump did get some love and now no longer growls at the driver.

My M5 is going on a diet. I found chrome goodness under my tupperware. If Sherman can do it, so can I.
Man, I open this thread and see some red euroedness and believe I'm on the right path!

Fought with exhaust systems all day. I was looking to replace the stock exhaust on my 633. It was beginning to rust through and I suspected a plugged cat (turns out I was right about that too). I had bought a Magnaflow 23558 (downpipes/cat for 533/633) for the front half, and a Walker 47656 (cat-back for 535/635) for the back, fully prepared to deal with the flanges not matching. But it was worse than that. Basically, all the pipes were welded on crooked. The Walker piece hit the subframe before the hangers were anywhere close. The Magnaflow had a redundant heat shield which hit the stock heat shield on the car. I tried to bolt it up to the stock cat-back, and that didn't even work because the relative lengths of the two pipes at the flange were wrong. So I had to cut and weld a bunch of stuff to make something workable.
Now that the exhaust is uncorked, I need to retune my VE table which is suddenly lean all over the place.
On a side note, I was looking in my 528e owner's manual recently and in one of the pictures I saw what looks like a legible 17-digit VIN. Although it is not a "real" VIN, as the 4th through 10th digits don't fit the standard (my '80 320i had one of these early non-standard 17-digit VINs). Out of curiosity I plugged the last 7 into RealOEM and it came up as an e28 520i with 11/80 production date.

Well, it wasn't exactly "today" but it happened Friday.
I sold my project e28 in hopes of driving my own car again some day.
Here are the last photos I'll be taking of it. Waiting for it's wheels from the new (old) owner:
Bye Bye:
Replaced it with
this:
89 535i/a from SoCal:
I just needed a running and driving car. I couldn't find time for the project and it had been sitting in the same place for 6 months. Now I can start with a clean slate, no rust, and do what I want to the e34. Hopefully someday I can slip into a clean example e28 again. I'll miss it.[/img]

New front snow tires, front pad slap (no dinero for rotors) rear subframe bushings (used an oxy torch and a puller with a slide hammer in below freezing weather, bitch of job, but DAMN does it ride nice now!) and a good old fashioned tape measure alignment.

Goodnight, sweet prince, until you're called into service again.

New accelerator cable installed!
It would have been so easy, but the old cable looked like it was snapped into the firewall upside down. Made it difficult to get both tabs pushed down to release it. There were witness marks all over the firewall where somebody had struggled with getting the cable out at some point
I added a few of my own.
Also did the 2 bushings for the accelerator pedal linkage that crosses under the brake and clutch pedals. One of the bushings was completely gone and remnants of it were resting under the pedal, the other was hanging on for dear life.
Huge improvement!
