It's on top of the gear box. It is sorta in the foothills of the bellhousing.

You don't need to remove the starter. The bolt is right behind the inboard starter bolt. Like Chris says, pivot the engine/trans down as far as you can, supported with a jack or something.

Then put together about 3 ft of extensions and a swivel and a couple of bungy cords around the trans to hold it. Push it up to the bolt area on top of the trans, then climb on top, reach down with your finger tips and jam the socket on the bolt head. Get back under, firm up the socket connection and remove the bolt.

Be ready for the heaviest damn trans you've tried to dead lift, when you put it back in. I don't think I would do it again on jackstands without a helper.

I will agree to those terms.

When you say swivel, do you mean a swivel torx socket?

I am trying to get a hold of one of those now.

Drove it to work for the first time in about a year. It's reassuming daily duties as the e34 has done a throw bearing and I won't have the time to pull the 'box until next week.

I made it this far today. I had to call a buddy over for assistance.

I've been taking pics along the way. I'll make a thread about how I went about doing it when the job is done. Dsmith assures me the fun part has yet to come

A good torx socket + a 24" extension + my Snap-On CT3850 Impact wrench = success every time.

Finally got around to tidying up a final few things on my "to do" list.
Borrowed a lift and went to work.

Swapped diffs and, surprise, diff covers too. Removed the 3.73LSD for a 3.46LSD.

Image

Added a RD strut brace

Also managed to install new front sway links, some more shadowline trim, oil/filter change and an overdue follow up inspection of all suspension bits and pieces installed over the past several months. That was a lot of nuts & bolts!

A good day away from the store! :alright:

Thanks to the info on this site, other sites, and in the Bentley manual, replacing all of this on my 1986 535i (11/85 prod. date) used up my past couple weekends:

Clutch disk
Pressure plate
Throw-out bearing
Rear engine seal
Pilot bearing
Transmission input shaft, output shaft, selector shaft seals
Transmission mounts
Clutch pivot pin
Driveshaft guibo
Driveshaft center support bearing
All shifter parts except the carrier and selector
Front suspension control arms
Thrust arms
Tie-rod end links
Front and rear anti sway bar end links
Front and rear anti swaybar mount bushings
Rear subframe bushings (Ireland green poly)
Rear trailing arm "dog bones"
Rear shocks (bilstein sport)
Differential mount

I ran out of money and will have to do the front struts in a month or two. The difference that all of this made is wonderful. The car is so much more enjoyable to drive. Thank you.

I removed a bunch of crap this morning. If the rain holds, the rear suspension and fuel tank are next

Is this bushing bad?

How much of this do I need for the power steering to work?

You could just go to a vacuum booster and the 528e stuff. No power steering cooler either.

Well, I will be creating a manual brake setup, so no need.

However, I'll PM you about an eta p/s reservoir.

Last week I got the cluster connectors straightened out for the cruise control and it worked fine for a couple days then stopped working yesterday so did a search and figured maybe the control module :| So today I said "what the Hay" , with all those wires in the column all scrunched up I'll just telescope it out all the way and see what happens,,,,,,,took it for a spin for petrol and sure enough CC works again. But the best part was when I extnded the column I got a plume of 74" CARRERA out of the dash ;) Still smells the same.

That's funny right there.

I picked up a rear windscreen, from an is, with this car that had his decal on it.
I'll have to post a pic. Gonna be keeping it for its  factor.

I spent much of the day playing with my new wideband meter and adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Too bad I don't remember to take pics, until it's too late (off the rollback).

I got an April Wine cassette tape stuck in my radio.

It was stuck in rewind mode somehow. Turning the radio off did nothing, turning the car off did nothing. I finally had to pull the wires out of the back. It wasn't happy about that either. The anti theft beeper was going off :x

I just got that freaking thing working last Saturday after not having a radio for 4 months! Ugh.
