Swapped the red interior from the old eta into the Alpine '88. I like it better than the blue, and this may just be a step towards black, but for now I'm pretty happy. Also did some por 15 treatment in the floors while I was in there, nothing major at all. This is my first e28 without at least one hole or the start of a hole in the floor.

Side note, the eta's carpet had the pad attached, I thought the early cars had carpet and foam seperate, but not this. Odd considering the carpet in my 85 was the seperate padding.

Leatherique. The steering wheel was especially hungry. It took a few coats before it stopped soaking it all up. I'll clean and finish it all tomorrow.

I wasn't working on my E28, but E28 parts. I still had the trailing arms from my 535is in the pile of stuff next to the shed. I needed to rob the drive flanges out of them temporarily. While I was out and about, I swung by my buddy's shop with one a day and we pulled them out. Much easier than I expected with a three-jaw puller and it was good to know that it didn't affect the bearing, so it's something we can do on the car. After I came home, I decided that since I had 25 minutes before I had to leave for my next appointment, I'd see what I could accomplish towards tearing the arm down. He said use an air hammer to drive the hub out. I don't have an air hammer, but I had a regular hammer. I left the nut on the shaft and drove it out. Sweet. Didn't damage anything either though as expected, the inner race stayed on the shaft, so I'll have to cut a slot in it and hit it with the cold chisel while wearing eye, ear, nose and throat protection. Undid the brake line which wasn't salvageable due to some ham-fisted mechanic back in the car's past that rounded the fittings, but I will change those out with another good set I've got. Pulled off the backing plate and then it was time to tackle the bearing. After fighting with the circlip for a while (it didn't want to move out of the groove, so I had to work it slowly), I popped it out and found a die from my bearing press kit that fit the best (72mm fits pretty well in the opening). Then, I took the arm over to the press, positioned it, used an impact socket between the ram and the die and soon came to the realization that there's no way in hell this was going to happen on the car. Holy crap. This press was a good investment. It was pretty scary though once it first started moving the bearing. That thing was in there.

Next up is pressing out the trailing arm bushings and for that, I need to get a piece of pipe to go between the bushings. The spacing is exactly 13" which is weird to me and I'll need something like a 2" id steel pipe to do it. If these arms didn't have the brace, I probably wouldn't need to do it this way but it gets in the way of the press bed and the head so I'm not left with much choice.

I had to.
My daughter/s-n-l have been "borrowing" Snob since last October,
and I just couldn't stand it any longer.

Resoldered several components on both my main (Conforti) and spare ECU (mfg. date 1993) in an attempt to chase down an intermittent stalling/no start problem. Also bypassed the immobilizer relay. I'll be able to test it later (several days), as I've also got the transmission halfway out so I can replace/diagnose the sticking clutch. I see now that the infamous linkage clip has earned its name.

Replaced the heater blower resistor. What a PITA. Now it is not smoking when I turn the knob to third position . :D

It was huge help, that I had the donor 528i heater box around to practice.

Rust remediation fest with a vast amount of POR15, replaced idle control module and voltage regulator, replaced all fuses, and fixed the driver seat. Next up: oil change.

Worked on removing any unnecessary wiring from the body harness. I've removed close to 15 pounds already.

Cold start valve has gone TU, so I finally got around to blocking off the fuel supply.
Still a little rich, I think...could that be the Turner chip, or the Mustang injectors?
Next up, check the FPR.

When I drove the newly-acquired 535is (officially nicknamed "The Mistress") home Saturday night, it had a miss that was persistent unless it was running about 3000 rpm or higher. LJ thought it might be the spark plug wires, because that was something that the guy he got it from had changed before he took possession of it. So yesterday I swapped out the wires with a known-good set, and it didn't do any better. Tonight I swapped out the spark plugs with a new set of Bosch Platinums. 1 through 5 looked good, but #6 was definitely the culprit; zero gappage:

Image

How the heck does that happen and get installed in the engine without being noticed?

Putting The Mistress back together is going to be an adventure.

I'll bet the car will run better with the zero gap plug than with the platinums.

When I pulled the first old plug out, which was a Platinum, I remembered something about that and thought, "There's the problem." I had the new Platinums on the shelf already -- they were a "gift" from a PBE a while back -- and stuck them in more for troubleshooting's sake. After I typed that up last night I did some reading on plugs; they'll get replaced with some proper plugs soon enough.

Hey Dave,
