What did you do to your E28 today?
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
A bunch of various buttoning-up before this weekend's short run up to Saratoga, including -
6 new intake boots and some underhood cleaning while the intake was apart
Tried a new cruise control brain - no change in cruise intermittency
Popped the cluster and found sort-of loose connector - maybe that was the cruise problem? Will test Saturday morning.
Replaced the steering column giubo (yes, it's jew-boh, not gwee-boh, and I still want an autocorrect ).
Vacuumed a lot of soccer field grit out of the footwells.
I've got about 400 miles to run for work and Scout camp between now and Saratoga. The car's clean enough -if it's lucky, I'll give it a Meguire's-spritz whore-bath when we arrive at Saratoga. That will have to do!

The E28 parts car is now a E27-and-three-quarters

Micah, if you were messing around with the steering column, maybe check the ground for the stalk behind the steering wheel. I had an intermittent cruise that was because of a loose ground there. And of course check the clutch switch adjustment.MicahO wrote:Tried a new cruise control brain - no change in cruise intermittency

Do you swap out the tail lights too?

What is this "smog test" of which you speak of so often and with such dread?Karl Grau wrote:Did some minor exhaust work cough, cough, before my upcoming biennial smog test.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Well, it depends. Right now, it's an E12 and an E28, but it will soon be two E28s. Might change them out somewhat regularly.davintosh wrote:Which two?
Tonight, I moved in some of my wheels and tires.
Here's a video of how that's done.

That's pretty slick! No prize though unless you can do it with a full set.

Did some minor exhaust work after passing my biennial smog test. The smog guy was surprised the paper '50 State Legal' sticker was still readable after being on the car for two years.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
I added a little Hartge and euro. Still need to fit the turns, then disassemble and plastidip. Thanks to minotaur for the valance and spoiler. The bumpers were under my mtech kit.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Lookin' good David. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Thanks. Eventually, the full resto will include US bumpers, so I'm not looking to make it perfect. I figure I can just peel off the plastidip later. This saves another 30 lbs vs the mtechs and the fabbed solid metal grill that was on it.1st 5er wrote:Lookin' good David. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Supa ETA got a new oil pressure switch and connector.

Not today, but yesterday, drove the snot out of the 535is at my first autocross. It was fun, but the main thing I learned is that I have a lot to learn. I posted my best time (80.245) on my first run, and went downhill from there. Spun out on the second run and got a dnf out of that, and made a bunch of dumb mistakes. My oldest son did his first run slow, and steadily improved. His best run was his last one, and about a half-second faster than mine. Next time though...
No, we're not competitive at all.
My sister was in town for my nephew's wedding reception this weekend, and I made the mistake of mentioning what we were doing on Saturday; "When is it? I'm coming to watch!" So she showed up, along with her husband, her son, another of my sisters and her hubby, then my nephew and his wife & kids showed up... It was all rather embarrassing.

A lack of fear and youthful reflexes can be handy sometimes. You'll just have to improve faster to show him what for, Dave.
I tried to get my dad to go autocrossing with me. He refused. So good on you for doing that with your son, regardless of the results.

That's where the block belongs for sure!
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Finally solved the ABS issue. Front/left and rear/right wheel speed sensors were faulty. Replaced them with new ones from Bluntech(great service!). Replaced glovebox light. Hooked up Z3 permanent antenna, very cool looking for sure. Was worried about reduced reception but the BMW antenna is most excellent. Vacuumed and cleaned interior. Received new Furstil Cocomats, and very happy with those. Installed Dave Pepin's clutch bracket, as mine had a large hairline crack. Great product. Never realized how crappy it felt before. Feels new and crisp.
best,
Jeff

Adjusted the valves, replaced the spark plugs, cap, rotor and water temp sensor. Was having a high temp miss in #1 or 2 cylinder. Could not isolate it. But when replacing the cap, the #1 wire would not come out of cap. It actually broke off, so that was my miss, I suppose. I did not think my plugs and such were that old, but I guess I was wrong. Runs great!

Installed the M5 boot carpets.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Started to replace what I thought was a leaking water pump, then saw the bolt at the bottom of the pump was not there, the PO must have not needed it .
So installed the missing bolt & replaced the adjuster nut on the alternator while I had it loose. Now I have a spare new water pump for later. I'm suprised it wasn't losing water more often for the past 2 years than it has. I saw a few drips under the pump, but didn't notice the missing bolt.
