What did you do to your E28 today?
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Took a buncha new pics of 'er, which I haven't done in a while. Also trying out a new look w/ the black (plastidip'd) wheels.

Pull the front grille pieces and kidneys off, cleaned them really well, primed them and painted everything black. All the plastic was faded and the chrome trim was getting ugly. Got the shadow lining done on the left taillight. Tomorrow I'll be finishing up the right side, and working on removing the rest of the chrome on it. Hopefully tuck the bumpers tomorrow too.

Put my BMW Performance Center decal in the back window, to celebrate the many times i've flogged this car there.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Ya know, every time I see that car I think, that's a really good looking E28. And I'm not even an euro bumper fan. My complements, a nice looking car.e28Sean wrote:Took a buncha new pics of 'er, which I haven't done in a while. Also trying out a new look w/ the black (plastidip'd) wheels.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Pulled the craptastic cover off of it. I got it washed on the last nice day, then parked it in its usual spot & covered it up, thinking it'd stay nice & clean instead of collecting leaves & bird crap. The cover was supposed to be waterproof, but the car was all wet underneath it after a night of rain.
It looked good wet, so I took a few photos, but avoided angles that exposed the trash cans & recyclable bins that are a few meters to its right.
As much as I dislike the black wheel look in general, these Schnitzers are growing on me.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
We had our usual Thursday off, but today the wife had her own plans, so I was free to do as I pleased. I gassed up the car and drove north toward Titisee & Feldberg, the land of the high and narrow, curvy roads. It was a bit drippy/drizzly, but not cold enough for snow; at least not today. There were places at the higher elevations that still had snow on the ground from a day or so ago, but nothing on the roads. It was a great day for driving in that area; crappy weather and a weekday afternoon helped keep a lot of the tourists away!
There are some gorgeous sights up there, even when the mountains are draped with clouds.
(and in case anybody's wondering, no, I didn't drive up that dirt path. )

I'll bet you were thinking about/ wanting to drive up that path.
Beautiful photos.

GRR Walked out to the van and noticed the RR window was shattered. It was intact except for a single shard on the ground. The force was from the inside? WTF. The temps got down to about 45 last night. Ive messed around with the driver's door insides. I am harvesting from the Borman6. Not how I wanted to spend the dwindling daylight, Oh wait, I can put it in the tent. Pissah!
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Blew out the D window on the touring a few years ago weedeating and went oh shit. Still intact, so I took clear package tape to it, inside and out. A little soft and squishy, but it help up just fine for the few days until the replacement came in. Beat the hell out of a big hole in the car.a wrote:GRR Walked out to the van and noticed the RR window was shattered. It was intact except for a single shard on the ground. Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
That is the very same thing that happened to my LR window in mine about 8 years ago here in S FL. No great temperature change either. Used the car in the late afternoon, parked it in complete shade at about 6pm and went to get in it at around 8:30 and it was just shattered, all still intact though, until I shut my driver door. Weird.a wrote:GRR Walked out to the van and noticed the RR window was shattered. It was intact except for a single shard on the ground. The force was from the inside? WTF. Quite the fiddle getting that glass in there.

Great pics.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Thats the neat thing about a parts car. I get the moves and tools gathered for the job. Bentley has a page and several pictures. If I bungle this, there's the original parts car deeper in the woods. Ain't skeered
PS. yesterday I started and got the door card and and several 6mm bolts out of the door. Today I removed the trim and pried the window off the regulator. Easy peasy. The regulator and motor look brand new. Will the motor swap with the driver's door motor? It no longer responds to banging.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Removing a broken window is a PITA . Used 2 vacs so far and dropped 95% onto an old sheet. Bentley ends the segment with "installation is the reverse of the procedure." Or some such dreck. I think I have it figured out. I have the window and its holder loose inside the door. Time to come in and visit Mum. The Millenium Falcon, yuk yuk, is in the tent. Power has been run. Bopped a lot to Graceland. Next is gonna be getting the window back in the tracks which are also loose in the door.
Part 3. . After work, I succeeded in getting the window in the channels and connected to the regulator. The regulator needed to be shifted to hook to the rail.. I loosened the bottom bolt, the one with the nut. With the 3 screws out, the regulator pivoted enough to connect to the rail. Re-mounting the regulator was a breeze. With a charger on the 8.64 V battery I succeeded in raising and lowering the window. Much work left to adjust and replace. Right now the car is drive-able .It may be put to use on Turkey day.
Part 4 Brr, but at least I'm out of the elements. Adjusted and lubed the guide track and the rail. right now all the bolts are loose. The action is free enough to keep the rail attached to the bottom of the window The fix was to have everything free to move as it needs to. I ran the batt flat again.. It is being charged. Progress is slow but steady .

Well I have to confess I feel like the wrenching champion of the universe: Last weekend I swapped the heater valve on my Supereta.
Took me 3 hours (with pee breaks & dinner) The most unbelievable thing is: it worked! I have heat now!

Good job Foonfer, Compared to the 535i, the eta HV is a knuckle scraping PITA
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Finished fixing the rear bumper mounts. Fixed is a relative term - the bumper is no longer on the verge of falling off. The left bumper mount had completely rusted out of the body. The right side of the bumper had completely ripped off from the bumper mount. Now both sides are reasonably solid, thanks to lots of sheet metal, blind rivets and fender washers.
The car had sat unused for months. When I finally started it, the right side headlights didn't work. The problem was that the ground wires for both right headlights had failed at the connectors. Also, the high beam connection at the dual beam right headlight had similarly failed. Quite the coincidence, eh? They are now fixed, sorta. The wired had corroded out of existence, so I clipped the connectors off, stripped the wire, and reused the connectors. I managed to recrimp the insulation for OK strain relief. As far as the electrical connections go, solder was involved, and I'll leave it at that. Hey, it works - for now.

Finally replaced the RR door card. The window is fixed.!
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Hmmm, I hadn't heard of that before. Looks interesting, but pricey, how much did it set you back? I'd be looking at the 90 but I doubt there's much difference in pricing.Federico wrote:I had 3M's crystalline CR70 tint applied to the 528i, and couldn't be happier with the results:
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
It cost me around 340 USD (in buenos aires; I think it's pricier in the US). I also thought about the CR90, but the CR70 filters quite a bit more for a small loss in transparency. It's hard to tell the windows are tinted when driving at night, and I'm sure most people would't notice there is a tint at all.Mike W. wrote:Hmmm, I hadn't heard of that before. Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Another car, another bunch of leaks to fix and parts to clean. I did the oil pan gasket yesterday. These parts and more under the car were hunks of black tar.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Attended a track day. Took a short excursion through the infield.
Based on my recollection of events, and the fact that another participant had an eerily similar off, at the same spot, just a few minutes later, has me blaming a combination of a slight over-application of the loud pedal, and track surface contamination. (There had been a vehicle leaking coolant earlier in the day).
Thankfully no damage other than getting the car muddy, and the inside full of lawn clippings.
Things started to go wrong around point "A", and got a lot worse somewhere in the vicinity of "B". Vehicle came to rest at point "C", facing in the direction indicated.

That must have been a bit scary. Glad you and the car made it out with really no issues.
