I went to change my transmission fluid this past weekend. Got all four corners on stands, mt90 and oil pump in hand. I go and slide under with the catch can and stare at a 17mm allen plug. So thats what you guys meant when you said "be sure you can take off the drain plug before starting." Oh well.

Well I think I finished your task for you -- I had 17mm sockets that worked on mine thankfully. I also have a huge appreciation for the Getrag now -- I "drained" the transmission fluid, and maybe, maybeeeeee a single ounce of fluid came out. YIKES.

Other than that, uneventful, though slow. Shifting feels better, shockingly. Never knew that I was shifting without fluid ....

I think the advice you are refering to is, "make sure you can remove the fill plug before draining the oil".

You have 20 17 mm allen heads on your car; each of the lug bolts has a 17 mm head. Seriously though, all you need is a couple of M12 x 1.5 nuts to thread onto one of the bolts, snug them together to lock them on the bolt, then use a regular wrench to get the plug out.

Not my idea by a long shot; read it around here somewhere.

yeah, I read about that too but I just ordered the tool on amazon. Wasn't too bad, but I still have a white ugh

I replaced almost all of the vacuum hoses on Saturday. I have been looking everywhere to put the fuel regulator vacuum hose. Hoping to document this for someone in the future to not have to go through the drawings and vague pictures in the future.

New Z3 shifter and bushings, wow! i should've done this since i bought my 535. what a difference! highly recommend this simple Mod.

Took my new-to-me 84 528e on a shake down cruise to Austin, Texas, to see my youngest son. Two hundred, seventy five miles, one way through the Texas hill county, undulating terrain, gentle curves, good asphalt highway. Re-learned the adage that it is more fun to drive a slow car, hard than fast car, gently. Car held together and performed well. Averaged about 25mpg; used 1/2 quart of Castrol 20-50 in 550 miles.

Found my ac button working intermittently. I haven't had my ac blower motor in for a while since it locked up, but found it odd the ac fan wasn't working either. Checked the fuse and it was melted. Seems odd that it melted instead of blowing.

Sold some parts off of it.

Plotted its demise anybody need anything?

Bled the brakes and took it in for an estimate to have some rust dealt with.

Replaced (almost) all the coolant hoses, put some new shoes on (RE760 Sport), and took it for a drive.

Found a screw with it.

Got my replacement tire mounted today. Came back with screwed up plastidip on the wheel (not entirely unexpected).


So, i assembled my Precision Wheel Cleaning Stand (which is totally not a shop vac with an upturned 5 gallon bucket on top).


... And I set about getting the wheel peeled & cleaned up.


Then i broke out the widowmaker...


... And got the wheel mounted back up.

Broke the instrument cluster apart to fix a the usual problems. Replacing the odo gears went smoothly enough. All the light bulbs except one were good...just needed 30 years worth of corrosion sanded away. Have to rig up a new battery for the service interval lights before I put the whole thing back together. Am anxious to see how many things I really fixed.

I am about to rent the BMW 3026 tool.

That the Bentley says nothing about.

My '87 535is has turned 115k miles and I just had the injectors cleaned/flowed at RC Fuel Injection in Torrance, CA. I brought them down personally (a 75-mile drive through L.A. traffic) on Wednesday and they were at my doorstep Friday morning via UPS. They did the injectors on my E24 years ago and I was very happy with the results, so I used them again.

The "Before Cleaning" report on the E28 injectors is quite shocking. The (stock) injectors are rated at 190 cc/min. Mine had a wide variance: 125, 159, 172, 174, 178, and a best of 185. Spray pattern on all of them was either "dripping" or "poor".

"After Cleaning" measurements are like new; all are at or very near factory spec at 189 to 191 cc/min. Spray pattern on all is "excellent".

I also cleaned out my throttle body with CRC cleaner.

First thing I noticed when I started the engine is how much more smoothly it idled, with all the injectors now in balance and a clean TB. Now it's turbine-smooth from idle to redline, the way an M30 should be. Probably picked up some HP too, although I haven't yet confirmed that with the butt dyno.

The weather was nice today, so I took it out for a bit of a romp, and was reminded of why I like this car so much.

The reason I took it out of the garage (for the first time in over a week!) was to keep Lonnie the cable guy from dinging the paint with the tools dangling from his tool belt, but I think I was too late. Walked him into the garage from the house, and when I went back in to grab the keys, he walked past the car to go to his truck, and I heard a couple clunks against the side, which he denied. Sure enough, there was at least one tiny new nick. Grrrrr. This is why I shouldn't have nice things.

Reminds me of my first E12. I had a rattle in the gas tank and found the wheel mounting/aligning rod in there. Not what I'd put in a gas tank, but to each his own.

1ST 5ER HAS something under the rear shelf that slides from side to side on hard cornering.
