What did you do to your other car(s) today?
I'm not displeased at all. She asked what the W & S switch located by the shifter was for as her 400E didnt have this feature. I told her W was German for WIMPS and S was German for Scheiße!Mike W. wrote:You say that like it's a bad thing. A couple days later she said "I like this shit better than that shit" referring to the switch position. She got me, didnt even smile, just winked. I'll keep buying her tires.
Last weekend I finally got around to changing the oil in the 735i; it was still running 20W-50 but the temps were moderate enough that it wasn't a big issue. We had a cold snap this week though (yesterday's low was -10° F) so I'm glad it was churning 10W-40 instead. Popped right off.
I saw it for the first time on the 528e last week. Up until then I thought it wasn't working or non-existent.ldsbeaker wrote:I FINALLY got the "low fuel" light to come on in the e30.

I'm absolutely sure that there's a way to mess with the sensor to trick the light into coming on... It's just more fun this way.rmiddendorf wrote:I'm with ya'll on this too.davintosh wrote:I saw it for the first time on the 528e last week. (Haven't seen the light on the e28, ever)
Nope, no way to mess with the sensor to make the light come on earlier. It's a switch. A contact in the bottom of the sending unit. Personally I didn't test the light more than once a week or so when I had my E28. I prefer to minimize my fillups.ldsbeaker wrote:I'm absolutely sure that there's a way to mess with the sensor to trick the light into coming on... All mine work, even in the E12.Mike W. wrote:Nope, no way to mess with the sensor to make the light come on earlier. It's a switch. A contact in the bottom of the sending unit. Driving to work the other morning in the 'ix, it was a bit nipply.
Turn on the heat, get about a mile down the road, temp gauge is at about halfway to red. Turn off heat, car still not happy, but I limp it in. Drive it home, no biggie. No check lights. Weird.
Next morning, driving into work, same deal, except I just had the dial turned to heat. Turn it to cold (shouldn't it be the opposite?), and the temp gauge stays planted to the right. Driving it around, it's right near red. *cringe*. Park it at work, still no lights, no leaks, no hissing, etc.
Let it cool down, then before lunch, I check the coolant reservoir. Dry. ugh. Filled it up, car is happy.
(but now I'll be waiting for the other shoe to drop from that hot running)

That's a 325is. Lots of people put M30s in E30s. Haven't seen anyone do a 4-wheel-drive M30 swap. A guy was working on a 24v swap, wanted to kill himself. Not sure if he finished. Yeah he'd probably have to dump the front drive components but it would still be a cool car.wkohler wrote:That's a 325is. Lots of people put M30s in E30s. I think that guy is on e30tech. wowza. I'll let him be the pioneer for that one. Maybe just a chip to start. I daydream about turbo, and maybe 3.64 diffs, but let's do an easy one first, huh? Plus, the ix is the "stock" car. (with lowering springs, konis, Ronal LSs, etc) AND, I want the ix to remain an ix. It's a first year model in red over black and everything works. That's gotta be rare... but then again, it's totalled. Whatever, I take it offroading here in Yuma. That's FUN.
I was going to do an M30 swap in an early e30, but then I had to move and had no room to transport the shell I wanted to do it in. Sacrifices. I don't want to talk about it anymore, it stings so bad.
E39 blues today. I've got a pretty good coolant leak, I think it's coming from one of the plastic coolant pipes that lives buried down below the intake. And it's due for a water pump and t stat just due to miles. So I'm taking it apart today after buying $175 worth of plastic yesterday find the water pump in fine shape. I guess water does have resistance. Then after I pulled the plastic electrically controlled thermostat I neglected to tighten the banjo fitting I'd loosened to get it off. So I spent the next hour and a half cleaning the garage floor of the mix of water and oil. I'm just hoping I get it finished tomorrow. I'd like to change the leaky pan gasket, but I doubt I'll have time.
They look almost the same, don't they?
But this sure doesn't look like $175 to me.

The passenger door on the X5 wouldn't open from the outside; all signs pointed to a broken door handle carrier, so I ordered one for the fix (I was thinking about trying a repair, but chickened out on that idea without a replacement part in hand.) Got it in yesterday & dug into it today. When I got the door apart, it looked like the mechanism was working ok, but it still wouldn't open from the outside, so I went ahead & replaced it. Works great now, but I'm still ata a loss as to why the old one wouldn't work; I can't see anything broken or cracked anywhere on it.
Not too concerned about it; my wife will be more than pleased not to have to wait for me to open the door for her from the driver's side. And when mama's happy, we's all happy.

It's harvest time in the desert... Trucks everywhere.
On my way to the tamale festival tonight and a truck is making a left turn across traffic. I'm getting ready to make my own left turn. He's trying to beat the light, so he didn't flare out as much as he should have. I had exactly 3 seconds to recognize AND react to the fact that he's not going to make the turn without tearing the front left of my car to shreds.
I back up about 2 feet (the chevy behind me had to be crapping his pants) then crank the wheel right and move up. Still barely misses me.
Whew!

Coolness. I still think keyless entry is grand.wkohler wrote:I now have working keyless entry in the touring. Huzzah.
I messed around with some spots of surface rust on the Porsche and then it started getting chilly so I went to Ye Olde Workshoppe and continued on my project to install Scheel seats on stock e30 sliders. I have no idea what I'm doing but things are moving right along.
Still struggling with the E39 and it's damned plastic "pipes" in the heater/cooling system. I've got them in but the intake manifold, which isn't nearly so easy as a good old M30, is fighting me again. Fought me on the way off and going back on too.
I'm longing for a nice easy job like an E28 heater core. Yes, it's that much fun.

Chilly... That's funny. What was it, 50°? it was about 40° inside the garage when I replaced the door handle carrier on the X5 yesterday. And rust on a Sandy Eggo Porch? Say it ain't so.Karl Grau wrote:I messed around with some spots of surface rust on the Porsche and then it started getting chilly so I went to Ye Olde Workshoppe and continued on my project to install Scheel seats on stock e30 sliders. I've got that job to look forward to on my daughter's 318ti. You're not helping. The M42 has ~170k on it, and no record of when the cooling system was gone through, but there's nothing leaking for now... Crossing fingers that it stays that way until spring. I just can't get past the idea of using plastic pipes in the cooling system.Mike W. wrote:Still struggling with the E39 and it's damned plastic "pipes" in the heater/cooling system.
