I know this is old but I want to chime in. I have owned a handful of BMWs, and driven a ton of them. The e28 just feels special. More special than my e36 m3. More special than my brother-in-law's e34. I was thinking about getting an e39, so I drove a mint 540i 6 speed. It bored me to tears. The interior was nice. The exterior was great. It was quiet and smooth. But yeah, boring.

e28 v e39

Post by cwl4m5 »

My e28 535is turbo with is hands down more fun and more of a drivers car than my e39 m5. My e28 is faster and handles better. I have had both out at the track and the m5 while much more refined is a pig on the track compared to my e28. My e28 does have a great suspension set up, while the m5's is stock, but they are totally different animals. The m5 is a great daily driver except for the gas mileage but the e28's gas mileage is poor now too after all the mods. my2cents

Personally I dislike anything quieter and softer that separates me further from the road, and that's been my experience with all the newer 5s.

Although I'm curious - you say the e39 has less unsprung weight, how so?
Will never buy one as long as I can find a really nice E28. They are sweet cars but very different in good and bad ways. It is a MUCH more substantial vehicle and you feel it, but I do like the way it drives more than the 335xi I just drove. Hated that thing except for the engine. It felt heavy on its feet, honestly.

and the point to what im saying is, there is nothing better than being able to rotate all four tires, because we all know the front ones wear alot quicker than the rears....

(from a daily driver stand point...)

Since when do front tires on a rear wheel drive car wear faster than the rears and if you cant rotate and the rear wear out quickly, you can just replace the rears which in the end should about equal out to replacing all 4 at the same time.
