I need to test the relay on the w/w tank as seen in the For Sale category on this board.
Short of trying it in a car that has the washers hooked up (hello JBort), any suggestions??

is where Chris and JBort talk about that relay. I think your best bet is to contack Jbort for help. You can send it to me and I'll check it in my Euro wiper set-up, but you didn't want to do that and if it works, and as Chris says sells for over a c-note, I probably wouldn't return it.

Now a second way to try to test it is to get the Haynes BMW 3 & 5 Series book Number 2020 has a circuit diagram in it and if RonW has this he may be able to tell how to check the relay. We got anyone else on the board that knows electrical stuff like this?

I guess I could scan the two pages and forward if necessary.

BMW relays usually follow DIN standards, which means you energize the relay coil by putting 12 volts across terminals 85 and 86. Your relay has numbers on the side case that correspond to the terminals on the bottom, although I can't tell for sure what the numbers are in your photo.

If you can figure out the right terminals for the relay coil, you should hear the relay click when power is applied. Then, you can test continuity across the appropriate terminals with an ohmmeter.

Here is a link to a BMW motorcycle website with a pretty good primer on relays. http://www.airheads.org/index.php?Techn ... and%20Tech

I have the wiring diagram on my website.

http://www.m535i.org/officers/ra/articl ... electrical

Pin 58 has power all the time (gy/wh wire)
Pin 85 (br/bk) has the signal power.

Then Pin 53 and 53a should send out a signal (one of them a signal, the other constant power for a period of time). Those are for the motors.

I don't remember if Pin 15 and 31 are to or from signals (to or from the washer motors).

The other method is to mail it out to one of us with a working system for us to test. Ian in NY (Muppet is the ID) tested my two older relays which came out bad.

Unfortunately I don't know my schedule in the next few weeks, so I can't guarantee you a quick turn-around time should you send me the relay to test; even though I'll still put up the offer.

-Chris
