Was talking with a German at my local parts store and he told me that lots of people (even BMW) puts automatic transmission fluid in the older 5 speed transmission. I have noticed that the BMW 6 speed tranny have auto fluid in them.

What are your thoughts?

I've heard of it. IIRC, I think it was Trent who does it in certain situations..

Duke, it depends on which transmission you have. Search the old MyE28 archives for a post from Rich Euro M5 about his e-mail with Redline. They gave him info on which transmission takes MTL, which one takes ATF, and which one takes GL-4.

I would copy and paste my post to one of the threads about this question where I just C&Ped Rich's post in bold, but I can't seem to find it right now. That's one drawback to posting so much. ;)

used it for years in my scca Datsun as did several other friends in It and production class cars. As I recall it was Dextron for Ford autos although I don't think it made any difference.

Dexron for Fords would be Mercon.

I'm pretty sure that the Pimpster (BPP) is running dexron III ATF in his tranny. It meets the GL4 specs if you don't want to use syn. stuff and would be good for cold weather areas.

Old company truck(Ford Ranger) 5spd. used auto tranny fluid straight from the factory Remember something about closer specs. it was better to use that than reg. gear oil ? That ranger had a Mazda built tranny in it too Randy/Fla.

Right you are Shawn, my intentions were to say "Dextron or Ford F, although..." Some days, you eat the bear, some days the beat eats you!

I have had ATF in my tranny for a while now. No adverse effects.
