god my car is falling apart!! !@#$

was just about to go somewhere and theres this awful humming and scraping noise coming from the somewhere up front, when i turned the steering wheel it made the noise much louder and changed the pitch, also i could feel the vibration from this 'problem' through the steering wheel and it seemed hard to turn. i had all the belts changed just about a month ago, so i dont think thats the problem.

i wasnt able to get the actual sound when it was happening but i recorded my car at idle with the hood open and it sounds like this. Theres a few different sounds in there... one is a low buzz, thats the fuel pump i'm pretty sure, the other is a 'click click click' coming from the engine, i have no idea what that is and the 3rd is a overly whiney, scraping noise which hopefully you guys can maybe tell what it is

Ok. I thought when I sold my 85 ford (4.1, crossflow head) to a wrecker for $150 I'd never hear that again. In that case it was no fluid in the power steering reservoir.

Also, adjust them valve clearances...

I could be off on the steering fluid, but it's a cheap look-see.

the power steering one is the metal thing right next to the coolant tank right? i unscrewed the nut and took the top off, theres a filter in it with a metal stick going through the middle of it but i cant seem to get the filter out, and i cant see any type of fluid level.. was following the directions in my cars user manual

what kind of power steering fluid should i pick up if i need some?

yes, that is the power steering res. (the metal can next to coolant tank ) do not buy power steering fluid. by atf, automoatic transmission fluid. the manual should say to use it. it will be the red color one. mistake on these bimmers is to buy the ps fluid, but it ends up being to thin and easier to leak. the metal filter is held by a clip, you might need needle nose pliers to take it out if you dont have the right tool. turn off the car, pump the brakes about 20-23 times and the fluid should be about 2-3 mm from the top. if you dont see any fluid, you are missing. you can try a flashlight to look into the resorvoir.

The resivior is the gold colored can on the D/S next to the coolant resivoir. To check the level, pump the brakes 10-15 times with the car off. Unscrew the nut holding the top on, and remove the top. The level should be no more than 1/2 inch from the top. Top off as nescessary. There is a filter in the bottom of the resivoir. Remove the e clip holding the screen down, another e clip below the screen, another e clip holding a plate down, the plate, and the filter is under the plate. Filter is cheap, replace it. Use only Automatic transmission fluid (Dexron II) for the fluid.

so yea theres about 1/2 inch of the fluid under the filter at the bottom of the resevoir.. so i pump my brakes out and after that add the new fluid till about 1/2 inch of the top right
