I'm in the process of fixing all the small things of my new 535i.
Last night I was replacing vacuum hoses since they were all cracked. One long hose on top went to a green/white valve and then a shorter hose connected to the bottom of the throttle body. This particular setup just fell apart completely as I was removing it, before I could notice which color the short hose was connected to. Any help?
Also, as I was removing the intake boot, the short plastic hose that goes into the valve cover from the intake was so brittle it broke completely. What is the name of this hose so that I may order another?
Also, I've noticed that the wind noise in this particular e28 is louder than others I've driven. Looking at the outside with the door closed, it almost looks like the front doors don't close tightly enough and the door sticks out about 1/8-1/4 inch than the rear doors. I couldn't find any info in the search other than window trim topics, but I'm not sure that's my problem.

Fortunally these cars don't have many vacume lines, I think about 4 total compared to a Toyota with 100 or so. The green/white thing one end starts at the intake on the bottom goto the temp vacume switch, then goes to a black round valve on the intake boot. Another one runs from the FPR down to the same area. There is one on the Breather tube that runs off the valve cover into the throttle body. And the last one runs into the cabin for the temp sensor.
The hose isn't plastic, only the right angle elbow on the intake boot is. Remember that there is a small plastic connection that goes in the middle for the vacume line.
You can adjust the strike plates with the three bolts, one large and two small cross tip type. Loosen these boys up and tap it in a little tighten down and see if that works.

I know where the vacuum hose connects, but I don't know which color, green or white, goes which way.
Also, the elbow shaped hose I'm refering to comes out of the valve cover and goes into the intake. Is it supposed to be rubber? This hose was so hard and brittle that I just thought it was plastic. What is this one called so that I order a new one?

The breather hose form the valve cover is soft rubber. The plastic elbow (separate piece) plugs into the breather hose, makes a 90 degree bend, then plugs into the intake bellows.

Elbow 13 54 1 272 473

BTW, I've never seen color-coded vacuum hoses on a 535...maybe because they've all been replaced...

On my car, the valve is white/green-banded/black, and the black side goes towards the throttle body.

I plan on ordering tons of stuff from you Steve...just waiting till I get paid this week
The only stuff I'd get at the dealer/Autozone would be something that I absolutely have to replace in order to drive the car, since it is my DD.
Correct, that valve is black/white with a green band. Black towards throttlebody...thanks!

Also, I went to the performance parts store looking for a can of BG44K to clean the injection system to give it a thorough tuneup.
They didn't have the single can that you just dump in the gas tank, but rather a whole kit. There's one for the tank, and another can that the guy said you were supposed to feed it in through a vacuum hose. Do I use one of the existing vacuum hoses or do I remove the intake and feed it right into the throttle body with a hose?

It's easy to decide which way (direction) the check valve is supposed to be installed. If you think about it, the manifold vacuum can only reach the temperature switch, and thus its intended end target, if the valve lets it suck. So, install it so that sucking on the end of the hose attached to the manifold passes air, and blowing on that end does not.
If it passes air in two directions you need a new one.
My question would be, why do you need that valve in a naturally aspirated motor? When is there pressure rather than vacuum for that valve to stop a backflow? I can see it on a turbo, where there is sometimes manifold pressure.

I disconnected the battery while doing some electrical work. Now the radio is asking for the code. I have the code, but the owner's manual doesn't' mention how I'm supposed to enter it.

You will need to take the radio to the stealership to get the code. Sometimes they can do it with the VIN only, but that is kinda rare.

No, I DO have the code...I just don't have any literature to tell me how to input the code.
Owner's manual doesn't say anything about the code, but it mentions there is a seperate manual for radio operation which I don't have.

Sorry about that, didn't understand the question 100 percent. The 1-6 for the radio station is how you input the 1-4 on the approate number, just push #1 until the first number comes up.

Another problem popped up...I was checking hoses on the coolant expansion tank. The one on the rear nearest the firewall was cracked. I tried following it to see where it was connected and it wasn't connected to anything. Perhaps I pulled it lose, but what is this hose supposed to connect to?
Edit: Nevermind...did a search and apparently this is just an overflow hose. Thanks for all the help

Can anyone offer advice on the best use of the BG44k? Do I use an existing vacuum tube into the intake or just one stuck into the throttle body?
