i took out the front passenger speaker, and took out the piece of carpet around it... where is this thing? is it up inside the hole of the speaker? i see nothing other than a pack of wires held together with white plastic, thats clipped just below the speaker hole on the inside.. is that what i'm looking for?

Gotta reach WAY up in the channe above the speaker hole - 2 small screws hold the control unit in place. Small / skinny arms help!

On my '86, I stuck my hand and arm into the speaker hole, feeling straight up to reach the control unit. You may see the sharp tips of the 2 screws facing toward you if you've removed the kick panel carpet piece.
It's even MORE fun putting it back!!

To aid putting it back.. thread the screws into the unit partially, and then feed the box up the speaker hole and slip it into the larger portion of the screw holes, its designed so that you can slip the screw heads through, and then pull the box down into the smaller portion of the screw holes for tightening.

Its probably about 5 to 6 inches above the speaker, dead center of the speaker hole. Make sure your battery is disconnected before removing it. Above the ECU, in my car, there is the idle control module. Perhaps in different model years and cars they had different locations?
