My new 535is needs a temp gauge sender. My old 85 has the one prong (62 11 0 788 115 ), as does (currently) my new 535is. The ETK and BavAuto list the 2 prong, more expensive sender (62 16 1 360 870) as proper fitment for my car. Archive search is not coming up with much either..... Please advise. Thanks.

My 88 535is has the one-prong. I can't think of a reason why it wouldnt work to replace it with a one-prong, esp since that's what's already in there... although someone might be able to. HTH.

Derek,

Since my ETK is down, I'm unable to trace the part numbers you posted. However, the coolant temp sender part number for my 528e is:

12 62 1 710 512

If I had my ETK, I could tell you if that was the same for the 535i, too, but I can't.

There are about 4 different sensors on the thermostat housing:

Coolant temp sender (for the temp gauge)
Coolant temp sensor (tells the ECU to enrich or lean out the mixture depending on engine temp)
Coolant temp switch (for the aux fan, IIRC)
Thermotime switch (tells the ECU the engine temp is low enough for the CSV to cut on)

The coolant temp sender is the only one-pronged part out of the above four I listed, and I have no reason to believe your 535i is any different.

I bought all of the above items from Da Parts Pimp at BMW of Chattanooga just a month or two ago, and the coolant temp sender with the part number I listed cost me $12.56. Call Brian tomorrow and have him get you the right part.

HTH,
