Anyone with Prius experience?

Thinking of adding a 2012 Prius to the herd. My wife is complaining about her fuel bill. She drives about 150 miles per day for work and the 3.46 in the e34, as well as the M3 are not as economical as she'd like. Moreover, she wants to be able to use the HOV lane at all times.
I told her I can put the 3.23 back in the e34...she wants the HOV benefits as much as better mileage. I'm keeping all the cars, but may have to add a hybrid. Yay.
Accordingly, if anyone has any experience with that thing I'd love to hear it.
Thank you

Woah, I was just cured of Prius. Trust me, you don't want to catch it. Always wear a rubber when you do it with unfamiliar women.

They're miserable to be in. Extremely cheap inside. They have plastic hub caps with aluminum wheels... which is really stupid... You won't get that much better mileage with it on the highway. That's not what it is designed for. I don't understand all these HOV passes for a car that gets marginally good highway mileage. My mom's standard civic gets better highway mileage than a prius. If she wants good fuel economy and HOV access, get her a motorcycle. The newer BMW bikes are quite comfortable with farings and windshields, heated grips, etc.
Does you area have
slugging?

My 2010 Fusion gets 32 MPG HWY.

Its not for me.
Its more of a time issue, which is why she wants HOV lane access...ergo a hybrid.
I won't drive the thing.

Hybrid?
Nope......four banger. Got it for $16K in 2010 with 13K miles on it. Still under warranty. The 2010s have to be dirt cheap by now.

I was looking at it ^^^ earlier today...it's on the research list.
I like the looks of the Honda CR-Z....but it's a little small.

I think if my wife had to do so much daily driving, I would also add safety to the list. And the CR-Z would probably not do too well in a highway-speed wreck.
You definitely have your research work cut out for you.
Best of luck!

If I could find a really good "flat Stanley", she could just use that with the M3 in the HOV lane. Would also save me about $25k for a POS I have no interest in owning.
I suppose I could suggest she quit her job and its' associated commute...but then she'd be pimping me for walking $ all the time.

I warned you about picking up road kill! "Naw," you said, "this raccoon's gotta be dead." Then you done gone and put him in the car with us. "He's just a twitchin' 'cause he's still fresh." Nope, he was a twitchin' 'cause he was comin' to!

It may be mind over matter, but a lot of people like the new Prius'. My boss has one at work and speaks relatively well of it and some of his own fleet consists of a V8 Vega, a 40 Ford coupe along with a Nissan pickup for DD'ing. So it's out of character for him. They seem to have gone to efforts to make them nice, a premium hybrid, not just something cheap. That said, I had one as a rental a couple of months ago and hated it, but mostly for being a controlling new car, like most of them are, but it did use very little gas in the 3 or 4 days I had it, including a significant percentage of time on the freeway where they are at their worst. I cared for it even less than the '04 I had to drive for a while at work, but that one wasn't quite as controlling. Not to my tastes but better than wanting a 12MPG 6,000 suburban assault vehicle.

Tim, is a Golf TDi eligible for the HOV lane? Once broken in, people on the VW Vortex were saying they're getting 48-52mpg on the hwy. Think of it as a smaller touring.

According to this site,
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/current.shtml, combined with Phoenix HOV laws, you can get yourself a 5 speed Jetta or Golf and run it on biodiesel and be in the clear.

Can't remember where I read the article, Motor Trend I think, but the new Ford Hybrid gets better fuel economy, is more powerful and has more interior room than a Prius.......
Then again......
It's still a Ford.

Your Prius sucks.
Thats what I and my boys say every time we pass one.
They are cheap, rattly, and only self righteous douche bags drive them.
A td Golf/Jetta is a much better choice, at least they are German and are designed like a car should be.

Thanks guys
I like the VW idea personally, but sourcing the biodiesel would be an issue for my wife when I'm gone flying.

Spend $40K to save on gas? Thats crazy.

It's nuts, is what it is...
The real issue is time lost in traffic here in Phoenix. She spends almost 3 hours per day stuck in traffic while the HOV lane is clear.
There are a few variables at play as well. We may move to a point more equidistant in the valley, which might render the gains of the HOV lane moot.

The hardest part about buying a Prius?
Telling your parents you're gay (nttawwt).
Last summer I shuttled a $400 97 Civic slushbox to and from Boston a number of times. 36-38mpg on the highway, depending on if I had the AC on. The 5sp is even better. Not for everyone (nor do you qualify for HOV) but it sure beats spending 5 digit$ on something that drives like a turd. And the Prius certainly does that. And may even qualify for the HIV lane!

I like this, but won't drop $50k just for the HOV lane.
