I have approximately 1713 binder clips holding it up now. How does the steam help?

Ugh....a wee moose nibbled on mine in the rear a while ago and I've been thinking of replacing it.

I now do not.

I have heard the steam will heat and help stretch it, so its easier to work. THen as it cools, it shrinks and tightens up.
Like working with twine or wicker, you wind it when its wet, then as it drys it shrinks and tightens.
YMMV and PAYOR and all other caveats apply.

I still have the M5 headliner I bought from Chris a couple of years ago sitting in storage. I can't find the courage to tear out the existing headliner. I know that a huge headache awaits me when I do finally take the plunge. For now, my dyed headliner is just fine.

Speaking of headliners, where did you get the replacement?

Generally, the instructions for installing headliners includes a final step of letting the car sit outside in the sun for a while so the heat smooths out the wrinkles. That wouldn't work very well this time of year, though. :)

You're installing a vinyl headliner in the dead of winter in Nebraska ! Tell me you're in a heated garage with an interior temp over 80 degrees. I use to stretch vinyl awning covers over metal frames and would always wait for a nice warm day.

I watched that video of the rebirth of the Inka 2002tii in Germany. There was a segment where they fitted the headliner and the guy doing the work made a comment on how methodical one has to be, and the patience required, to fit it properly.

Hope it turns out.

Custom made by my Aunt.

It's a cloth headliner, slightly lighter than canvas. With the wood stove going I had the garage up to about 70 degrees or so. After getting it clipped in place, its been sitting there for about a week now. It should be good & settled, but I have a few small spots to smooth out. Hopefully this week I can get the temp back up & glue it in place. Will see how it comes out.... I'm tempted to rip it out & replace it with something in cow print.

You'd think that a moose would do a lot of damage (even a small one)!

A neat trick is to find some duct tape that has a similar color to the headliner material on the sticky side and stick it to he back of the headliner. It won't look perfect, but it will look better than a hole.

Awesome. Show us how it turns out then convince your Aunt to make more and sell them. :)

This is why I will do some custom work to Cassandra's headliner and cover it zebra print duct tape. :D Adalia's will be dyed/painted black.
