Timing Belt Gear Wheel (old vs new)

Post by DJPoochi »

So I've seen it posted before, but I can't seem to find it by searching...

I'm trying to find out info about the timing belt's gear wheel.
I've seen to replace the old-style "pressed" gear wheel with the newer style. I've found the old style on RealOEM (11311714988), but can't seem to find the newer style.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
TIA

You can't get the old pulleys anymore. They were phased out in the 80's and replaced with the new design. The diagrams don't always match what you're getting. In this case if you look at the diagrams for a later M20, like an e34 525i, you'll see that it shows the same part number and the diagram is correct. Realoem also shows "SINTER" in the supplement field, which indicates that it is the sintered pulley, as opposed to the stamped one.

I wouldn't buy them new. Just find some on eBay or in a junkyard or something. They're very common.

Ah - I had seen Rod's advice (and pics) before, but it didn't state the part number. I didn't realize the bit on OEM about it was the only part that can be gotten now.

Thanks...

So far, I have picked out the following parts...

Gear Wheel (Top)
11311714988

Gear Wheel (Bottom)
11311717398

Timing (Tooth) Belt
11311713361

Adjusting Pully
11311711153

Water Pump
11519071562

Pelican shows a Composite (Saleri) and Metal (Graf) impeller version of the water pump. Anyone know which is better?
Also, do I have to get anything else (or not all of this) to do my timing belt and replace my water pump? Should I also be replacing anything else (thermostat, other belts, etc) while I'm doing this job?

You may find a leaky cam seal or cam seal oring while you're in there. Maybe, maybe not. Hopefully you don't find anything more than that because the front crank seal and the intermediate shaft seals are a pain in the behind.

would either of these be apparent from outside of the car? I have a small bit of coolant leaking from the front of the engine (can't find a hose that's leaking), and a squeaky belt sound when everything's cold. I've been told this is a give-away for a water pump about to go.

The car is pristine w/ just under 103k miles (original owner doesn't remember the last time TB was changed). Other than a sliiiight bit of oil from the valve cover gasket, everything else seems good.

I'm just trying to do everything she needs to keep her going strong!

Sounds like a water pump. If you have "No Idea" when or "IF" the t-belt was changed I would be afraid to even turn over that engine. Age can be as hard or harder than miles and you have both.

You will also need the newer camshaft adapter for the rotor and the bolts and washers for each gear. All that was in a recent thread. Maybe as recent as 2-3 weeks ago.

Oil leaks might not. The coolant leak is almost certainly the water pump. Nothing else up there.

Well, I know the belt was done before, but not when. I'm thinking it was 5 or so years ago....since then, the owner only put like 10k miles (max) on it....so its mostly age I'm worried about.

I'll look for that thread - if you know it, please link.

Thanks everyone!

Also updated my comments to that thread just in case it wasn't really clear what you need. ;)

I done this to two M20's now and my only advice is save an old t-belt that you use to hold gears while you loosen and tighten everything. You might damage that belt but don't want to damage any gears.

Also, we tried getting used gears from someone and the thing he sent us wasn't even for a BMW. It was close and looked similar but not right. After that frustruction I just got everything I needed from BMWMercedesParts.
