Just now, I was going through a spreadsheet I made a few years ago. It has many of the more popular BMW wheels, their part numbers, their applications, and their weights in kilograms. All of this info was taken off of the ETK, so the weight information could be off a little.
Here are a few. I find it interesting that the M-Technik TRX is heavier than the E38 basketweave. I was going to say that it's also interesting that the 16" E39 Style 29 crossspoke is lighter than the E38 basketweave, but nevermind; the E38 is 16x8 while the E39 is 16x7. The E38 basketweave is only about a half pound heavier than the 15x7 E32/E34 bottlecap that many of us use. Style 5s are hella heavy.
In order of weight. . .
14x6.5 E28 bottlecap: 6.62 kg
15x7 E34 basketweave: 7.4 kg
390mm E28 TRX: 7.64 kg
15x7 E39 Crosspoke (Style 29): 8 kg
16x7.5 E31 Turbine (Style 9): 8.08 kg
16x7 E39 Crosspoke (Style 29): 8.1 kg
16x7.5 E31 Crosspoke (Style 8): 8.2 kg
15x7 E34 bottlecap: 8.25 kg
16x8 E38 basketweave: 8.534 kg
390mm M-Tech TRX: 8.63 kg
17x8 E34 M5 wheel: 9.06 kg
17x9 E34 M5 wheel: 9.24 kg
17x8 E39 Style 5: 9.68 kg
17x8 E39 7-spoke (Style 19): 10 kg
Interesting, huh?

Conversely, I think as the rim diameter increases the tires tend to weigh less (just because there's less tire), so the total weight of the tire and wheel combined needs to be taken into account. Road and Track or one of the other car magazines had an article some years ago where they compared the unsprung weight of the different diameters of the same brand wheel/tire combinations. It was like 15", 16", 17" and 18". If I recall correctly, the 16" combination was the lightest, followed by 17", then 15", then 18" was heaviest.
Wow, check it out, I'm running the lightest wheels of the lot. Woot for me!
Jeremy
Me too! Only problem is I am running them with lardass heavy Nokian snow tires. I have a set of the E34 M5 17x8's waiting though.
I think wheel weight only matters when you ADD the weight of the tires to it. I think I'll weigh the difference betwixt them once I have found the right 17's (read: cheap) to run on them.

Re: Interesting info on BMW wheel weights
Great info here. It is interesting to see which wheels stand out for diameter/width and weight.
I had some wheels I was curious about and so I started adding when I found a good source.
