e28 m5 suspension

Post by Abaky »

Hi All

Hope you are all well.
Have a few questions regarding the standard suspension setup on my E28 M5, european.
I have what I think is standard BMW front suspension and Bilsteins on the back (yellow), not sure about the springs. Have taken some photos

Could someone tell me what these springs and shocks are and are they the standard ones?
Also my front suspension is crashing over bumps when going above 50mph. I am thinking that the spring are no good and wonder what the experience with this problem is. All the bushes have been changed recently.

Also want to lower the front suspension about 20mm as for the moment I am four fingers above the tires. any sujestions for replacement after market shocks and springs? Have seen a guy in Canada on youtube use the autofortune suspensions? any thoughts or experience with this set up.

thanks in advance

H and R lowering springs and Bilstein sport shocks is the most common answer to your question. I expect the ride will be a little rougher

old thread, but life and etc...

I ran HR and Bilstein combo on my M5.... HATED it... then HR would not even discuss it with me... I called and they told me the M5 was a different chasis from the 535 ETC... this was 12 or so years back, maybe they fixed their problem.. don;t know. I went with M technic and Koni.... Koni is NLA, no idea on M technic.... maybe Bilsteins with the M Technic ?

Yes, I calle H&R in Germany and they told me the same thing, but said that I should contact their distributor in France (where I am) to see if they have any other combinations that can be used.
I called Bilstein as well and they said the only shocks they had for my car was the B6, and I would have to find the springs to go with it.
So I called eurofac and sent them details of what I needed and my car, they are going to get back to me with some ideas..

we Will see

I have a similar question specifically regarding my older bilstein sports vs the current B6 version. Does anyone know if these are valved the same? I called bilstein but didn't get a very clear answer - it was more like "suuure, they're the same".

For the record - I have m tech springs up front with bilstein sports. In the rear, I currently have the SLS running (long story), but in the past ran bilstein sports with springs from my old 535is. That handling there was nearly perfect for me. I planned on installing M tech springs in the rear, but an ordering mix up sent me springs that don't fit (they are a narrower overall diameter)
