E28 Goodies trunk seal, anyone actually use it?

Post by code »

Just installed the e28goodies trunk seal, and it doesn’t fit well in the corners. Even if it sat flush, the trunk wouldn’t close. Does anyone actually use this thing?

 I haven't owned an E28 in a decade now and I clearly remember that isn't anything even close to the original trunk seal. Now I'm not saying the original can't be improved on, I'm not really a fan of the glue in the dish mount, but I hope they at least make it clear it's not like the original.

OK, I've stopped hyperventilating. (and it's not even my car) Is it possible it's mounted in reverse? If it's symmetrical, the answer is probably no. But if it's say an upside down J or L shape, with the flange facing outwards instead of inwards, I can see how it might work, and the trunk might shut. Might.

A bit OT, there are a variety of places that sell restoration parts, including things very similar to the original E28 trunk seal, albeit without the square corners, for often very reasonable prices. Yeah, it might be intended for a '65 Dodge Dart, but if it fits, who cares. If you're a purist looking for a perfect M5 restoration, it's out of the question, but so is the above.

I was trying to avoid the glue mess, this trunk seal was supposed to fit like an e30 seal. https://e28goodies.com/product/e28-afte ... runk-seal/

Problem is, the e28 has a short lip around the front and a wider lip toward the back where it latches. This trunk seal is the same thickness all the way around, and the way it’s designed I just don’t see it allowing the trunk to close. Wanted to see if there was anyone who had.

That seal will never work; It's just too thick. It might be useful for sealing around the hood, or the fresh air ducts to firewall joints. Trunk? Nopenopenope.

Yep, it was a no-go. I installed an OEM trunk seal instead. Cheers everyone.

The OEM seal is cut/molded/formed with crisp 45 corners, and a rounded design will never work.

If only the crisp corners would stay glued together!

Add that to the list of e28goodies problems! Good luck getting a response from them.

I have glued them together with silicone caulk, black of course, masked top and bottom and just close the trunk overnight. Never had one fail and on my last E12 it was over 10 years before I sold it. The silicone fills the gap and glues it together. A sharp eye can tell, it wouldn't pass muster at Pebble Beach, but IMO it's very low profile visually, and I like a dry trunk. And it beats the hell out of the gap both visually and functionally.

Which is why I just ordered a Uro seal.

Took several days to get a response form e28goodies. They finally agreed to a refund if I shipped the seal back. I said sure, just provide a prepaid label and I’d be happy to send the useless hunk of rubber back to Bulgaria.

“Sorry, we're not supporting that kind of stuff.” he says.

Looks like I’ll be calling Chase in the morning. Not because it was financially significant, but because of principle. The seal isn’t as advertised and will not work on an e28. And they know it. I’m not supporting that kind of stuff.

I didn't want to purchase from them for something as simple as a universal weatherstripping section. It was cheaper for me to order a couple small sections of a few sizes from amazon to test fit.

I actually ended up finding one that fit pretty close to perfect after having to pinch the U channel tighter to fit the 22ga(?) lip on the trunk. If you don't do that, then the water can actually come up underneath and into the trunk. So lay it flat on the ground and pinch it closed with a rolling pin or something before fitting it to your car.

This is the one I purchased and have used for about 15 months so far:

M M SEALS C101-13F Small Vertical Bulb Trim Seal Bulb Diameter 0.35" x Edge High 0.42" Grip Range 0.33"

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RV ... UTF8&psc=1

I've had my own issues with e28goodies. Everything they sell is something generic they rebrand as their own. If it was good quality, that's fine, but the stuff they sell overpriced is junk. I bought the 'updated' chrome windshield lock strip and it faded to black in 7 months. Initially they said they'd refund but then went radio silent.
