My car's was covered in black leather by the previous owner. I personally like it a lot.

Not sure of the standard grey/parchment vinyl but CA Tuned is making a kit in a black woven material:

I got a sample of it when I was doing my M535i and wanted a black headliner as the original M5 Headliner is long NLA from BMW. It's not bad but is foam backed which is a bit problematic long-term as any foam will disintegrate over time from heat and drying; how long that takes is anyone's guess but it will happen. I searched high and low for suitable headliner materials from all the auto upholstery outlets and found that either they are all foam-backed and/or are not wide enough for the E28 (54").
I opted for a non-auto specific cloth backed vinyl material that my upholster patterned and installed. He sourced the material through an Interior Designer he knew. They came back with two viable options both from Burch Fabrics and both reasonably priced and more importantly in the correct width (54"). I opted for the "Rebel" in Carbon but the "Motive" was intriguing with the weave pattern.
It's hard getting a good picture of it since it's black, but I'm very happy with it. My upholster was very pleased with it as it was very easy to work with and took stitching well and didn't stretch or sag (which happens to a lot of thinner foam-backed materials). The price was good at $29/yd, but you only need about 4 yards so it was just over $100 (this might have been at a designer's discount which is typically about 30% off retail but could be different).

Thank you, everyone for your response! It is appreciated! I have another question please, is it necessary to take out the front and rear glass to complete this installation? Many thanks!

And sun/moon roof since you need to overlap the headliner on the roof opening under the tracks & rails as well as the sliding panel needs to come out and to change the material.

I've been trying to find some of the Burch vinyl here in Atlanta and so far it has been difficult. I'll keep you all updated.
