Carbon Fiber Air Box Installed - Pics
Carbon Fiber Air Box installed. Bought out of Germany, 6-8-week build time, these built to order.
Purchased from:
https://www.vft-opitz.de/
Point of contact: Christian Opitz (good and attentive communication)
Tricky fit - took quite a few hours especially as I did not want to scratch the new CF airbox. I had to remove the engine mounts and jack up the engine under the oil pan, then tilt the engine to the right to provide just enough space to remove the factory aluminum box and squeeze in the new CF box, as it is quite a bit bigger than stock. Also required a small modification to the throttle cable bracket and trimming one of the coolant lines. Also requires a cone filter (I used K&N) RU-2430 and made two aluminum brackets to support the AFM. The factory air filter box will not work with this CF box.
Benefits: 13lb weight saving and more airflow to cylinders 5 and 6. I took the car for a 10-mile blast after the installation, and it drove great.

That's pretty cool. How's it sound? I think I remember hearing the e46 csl sounded better due to its cf airbox.
I wonder if you could coat it in something so you didn't have to worry about getting it in and out every time.
Did you provide the dimensions? I'd be pretty interested in one of these depending on price and if I could get one that didn't require me to use a different airbox.
I'd be curious on the price too if you're willing to share.

Re: Carbon Fiber Air Box Installed - Pics
Hi,
I am from the very first US people who ordered this box,
It was around 7-10years ago form Christian. Quality has
been improved by a lot since back then. We recently ordered
another one for E28M5 with the package I offer, cams standalone
etc
The major benefits from this box is reducing weight from the E28
nose as every pound is important...also it does not get as hot as the
aluminum/OEM.
Its a win win choice. I wish it was made from real Carbon-Fibre
as the ones for S54 CSL which I have installed many on E46s. Its
going to be even lighter than the current version from FRP
Hmmm let me talk to Christian to see how feels on this subject..
Pics bellow.
Regards,
Anri

Anri - Thanks for chiming in. Yes this is Christian's CF airbox. A real CF option would certainly be neat as well.
What's the best way to contact you regarding your Haltech EFI for the M88?
@Randomg - Budget on around $900 incl. shipping from Germany to the US

You can reach me via instagram for example or call whichever you prefer.
I also have something else for the box but not willing to share on the forum, yet.
When the time comes around for the stand alone I will share more about it.

Anri

Re: Carbon Fiber Air Box Installed - Pics
anyone have any experience with this one?
https://www.schmiedmann.com/en/product/ ... =AIRBM5E34
appears to be designed for an E34, but compatibility says "M5 all models", ha.

excuse my drooling
Re: Carbon Fiber Air Box Installed - Pics
I also used Christian's box for my M5, and have good things to report, though I made a number of other modifications at the same time:
https://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=107082
I can report that the sound improvement (induction sound) was substantial with my application. Here's a video:

I was told that the E34 box, while it looks amazing, will not work in the E28's engine bay. At least, not without a lot of moving and shuffling.
