E28 "Quirks & Features"

I learned a new quirk/feature of the E28 watching Doug D's review of the E28 M5 a few months back. Finally gave it a try today and sure enough it works! If you push the end of the turn signal stalk it cycles through the different functions of the OBC. This might be common knowledge to the old hats, but I've owned my E28 for over four years and never figured that out.

What other "quirks & features" can anyone share that might not be common knowledge?

That's why there's an arrow labeled "BC" on the end of the stalk, pointing towards the column.

Why it's labled BC I don't know, but it is, but my German is lacking. And it is common knowledge, I think in the owners manual.

But hidden quirks... On OBC, if you press and hold I think it's 1 and 1000 at the same time it tells you fuel level in liters. I've run it down to zero and driven for a while without running out. Good for an adrenaline rush even if you would rather not. Seems like there's another one or two also. The ability to put in a relay, to existing, but unused wiring, to enable a feature to be able to operate the power windows, key off, as long as a door is open. I really liked that one as I often go hiking on vacation while my long suffering wife waits behind, so it gives her window control.

There's more, but that's all I recall at the moment.

BC= Bord Computer. It was mentioned in the brochure that it was remote controlled.

Remove the cap covering the opposite hole in the BC from the reset push button to reveal an adjusting screw for setting the 1000+1 liters remaining. Sine the tank should have about 6 liters in it when the low fuel light comes on these can coincide if the adjustment is correct and the low fuel light is correctly illuminating with that 6 liters remaining.

Putting a relay in the main connector under the steering wheel C101 IIRC in the proper empty Wait Mike mentioned this. I'd have noticed it sooner if it was a separate paragraph. Shawn doesn't do paragraph call-outs or corrections.

Euro cars have the ability to turn on either the left or right parking lamps front and rear without blinking as the are the parking lamps as we call them. This is done using the turn signal control. Used to illuminate the car on narrow roads while you spent time in the beer garden watching the game at night.

Pressing the 100 + 1 on the OBC will show the TYP of coding plug used in the OBC. The different models of car that used the same OBC could require different coding plugs. The 535 might be 5.6 or 7. I'd have to check.

Both these two-button functions require an OBC button to be pressed to exit back to normal use of the OBC as the remote will not get a response.

Wiring can be installed to add the rear fog light feature € cars have. Then install one or two bulbs in the unused locations of the rear lamp housing.

I have mine wired through a switch to allow dual brake lights or rear fogs. One of these days I might finish putting in the rear fog indicator lamp wiring to illuminate the that dash light that is not included in US gauges. Having the € lens for the row of lights at the bottom of the cluster shows the location

I've got a quirk for you.
Early cars with manual fresh air inlet:
1: Put A/C full blast
2: close all dash vents (at each vent, turning it's wheel)
3: open fresh air inlet
Now you have cold air blowing out your hood inlet grilles!! Super Handy for... something I guess
