E23 745i turbo upgrade...

I have a 86 Euro Spec 745i and I would like to upgrade the turbo to a GT35r. From everything that i've read it should work with an adapter plate (which I already have). It was already chipped when I bought it and has a Tial waste gate. I think the factory (KKK) turbo I have just can't keep up.

Has anybody had experience with going with a Garrett GT35r or off brand GT35r turbos in this application? Feedback would be appreciated.

I've done it, search gt35 you should find my threads. I tried a t4 turbine first time, it was super laggy. then I got an t3/ .68ar iirc. it works great. I didn't use an adapter. I notched out the turbo holes to the corners and use 2 plates (front and back) with the nuts welded on, to press the turbo up tight to manifold. It works, not elegant, but it works. I like the performance much better than the kkk. The biggest challenge was the oil drain. I ended up using 3 street 45's (street means female/male) of 1/2"copper, brazed together to get where I could attach the drain hose. I siliconed the copper into the drain pipe in the block. Again not elegant but works. So far, I've been happy with my chinese ebay turbo.
good luck

I ran a GT3582R with the .82 turbine on my last m20 build. I would definitely put one of those on an m30 without a second thought. Genuine Garrett is the way to go, no telling how long the Chinese junk is going to last. The compressor and turbine are going to be less efficient meaning later spool and hotter boost. They'll work but the real shit works better.

I'd love to see a pic of your adapter plate. I thought about an adapter, but couldn't see how to, as the bolt patterns are so close.

Personally, I wouldn't waste time with an adapter plate. Ship your existing turbo to these guys https://www.pureturbos.com/ to have it upgraded to a gt35 or similar of your spec. Then you can direct bolt to your manifold & keep the party moving.

For extra fun, contact HitmanX about one of his updated m106 tial wastegates. You won't be disappointed with the combo.

If looking to take the 745 to the next level, add a 3k stall tq converter. Good balance of power delivery & fuel economy. :haul: If you're ever in my neck of the woods, I'll let you check out my builds.

You will be amazed the responsiveness when coupled with an updated turbo. At some point down the road, you might also consider installing a Superior shift solutions kit to firm up the shift points a tad.

For what it's worth, I had my K27 rebuilt by Charlie at Evergreen Turbo. He also added a billet compressor wheel, upgraded turbine wheel, added a v-band flange (bolt on), and tapped the oil feed for NPT threads. Should be able to test it out in the next month or so and report back.

Charlie is huge in the Porsche 930 community. He has been rebuilding/upgrading K27s forever. He was able to do the work within 2 days.

How well suited is the original K27 turbine housing for these upgrades? Can't do a whole lot about the A/R unless there are larger housings available.

HA, glad to see my WG and ECU still working. Did this car come from GA? I only recall making a few black ones as they ran more than plain silver. All sourced from TCD except one.

I have a GTX3582R wheel in my black 745, stock turbine wheel. Moves a pile more air and boost threshold seems about same as stock. It will knock around 9-10psi, before with stock 47mm comp wheel? Not a chance.

Nebraska e28 beta tested my original proto back in 2017! I will never forget the call as he was with Steve and he was copilot 'winner, winner chicken dinner' he yelled when they hit 15psi.

Very intrigued by that Evergreen place as I too feel a turbine wheel not designed in the 1970s would benefit these cars. Keep us posted if you go that route. It is fairly large when measured once, I think similar to a P-trim from Garrett. My blue 745 is so lazy with the stock K27...I forgot how they drove.

How did your Evergreeen turbo turn out? Can you comment on performance or dyno sheet? Thanks!

I am wondering myself! lol

I have been struggling with getting the "tuning" right on the car lets say, to the point where it will actually stay running. Been actively trying to sort that out so I can do a proper shakedown and really see what this is all about. Before these issues appeared, I did have a chance to do a few short drives and the spool felt quicker. At some point I will get it on a dyno to actually quantify-- however, I do not have a baseline to compare to.

If you ever want to pick his brain and get more specifics, Charlie at Evergreen is a great person to chat with.
