Just found an 88 M5 for sale in the area and was just wondering what I should look out for. Some things I seen that I didn't like was the cracked dash, 275K on the odometer, and what looked like JB weld on the oil pan. Also what about maintence on an M car with this amount of mi. ? I know when an E30 reaches this amount it run into $$$. Any help would be appreciated. help before I buy on emotion I realy want an M5er

I'd say , keep looking, that M5 is not for you, unless your prepared to spend $20K making her proper. The engine rebuild alone will cost you about $10K and the other $10K is for repair or replacement of all the other struff that an M5 with many miles will need. (this would be somewhat less if you're capable of doing any/all the work yourself). I'm speaking from experience, as I bought a high mileage, broken-down, M5 for $1800 in 2001. Four years and $20+K later I have a track ready (occasionally street) M5 that is just the way I want it (you can see it on Jeremy's e28 Gallery on the mye28 site). You can find a good M5, with half those miles, a maintenace history, and probably a few enhancements, for about $10 that you can drive today. It will cost you far less in the end to keep looking.... the right car is out there.
