I saw an ad for a guy who is parting a stroker 3.9. The car spun the #4 bearing at 70k miles. He took apart the engine but decided not to put the money into rebuilding it.

What questions do I need to ask if I want to consider buying the used crankshaft? It's a SCAT billet 3.9 that was used by Dinan.

Sorry if this is a stupid question...the deeper I get into an engine the more ignorant I am. ~_~

I would want to know if that journal was damaged enought to need machining or been overheated to discoloration. Scat has a reputation of building fine crankshafts and you might give them a call as to what to look for and a ballpark estimate for evaluation and repairs. Journals can be welded and remachined, it would just depend on it's current condition.

I believe Rich's mechanic here in Houston shipped his crank to them (Scat) for some repairs.

eric.....the journal can be built up via welding and then reground. if done make sure its rehardened/nitrided/etc.
also....make sure they check the thrust bearing surfaces........often overlooked...and leads to excessive end play............
