I got a turbo... :D

Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, yes, I do have a need for a truck this big.

Now for the goods. This thing is fricken BADASS! 325 hp and 570 ft-lb of torque!! It will definitely get out of it's own way. When the turbo hits, you better be steering straight, with nothing in front of you.

Another neat thing is the engine braking. Diesels naturally provide no engine braking. That's why semis have "Jake brakes" that make all that racket when they are trying to slow down. Well, this thing has a variable-vane turbo and a butterfly valve that seamlessly provides engine braking when needed, or all the time if it is in tow/haul mode. Going down hill, you can downshift, and the engine goes totally quiet, and maintains vehicle speed. At the bottom, it comes back to life and operates normally. Really cool.

It's got a 5 sp auto tranny that really works well. If you drop the hammer from a dead stop, it will spool up and stay there until you get to the speed you want. The highest reading I have seen so far is 28 psi!!

Fuel mileage is not so great. 12.5-13 in town and 17-18 on the highway at 72 mph. It is expected to get better as it breaks in. Some guys report a 2-3 mpg increase as they pass 20k miles. I "only" have 3k on it now (Owned it for just about a month now) But what do you expect from a 7500 lb machine with an engine that produces 570 ft-lb of torque?! (@)

Booker, that is one sweet truck. What the hell do you tow that requires that much of a heavy hitter?? Not giving you any crap, just curiosity.

17-18 mpg is fantastic for a vehicle that weight with infamous pickup truck aerodynamics. Get a tonneau cover for the bed and you'll probably hit 20.

I see the Pimp-meister's paw prints on that thing, hooked ya up good apparently. Congrats.

Jeremy

PS - 28psi ~0 definitely qualifies you to hang out with us boost junkies. It has a boost gauge in the instrument panel?

I saw a vane turbo off of one of these (or another similar truck) on ebay recently and I was wondering how it might work on an M30. I don't know enough about vane turbos (I know how they work in theory), but I do know it was a really friggin huge turbo that shouldn't have trouble spooling because of the VATN technology.

Has anyone thought of putting a vane turbo on their car? Do you know more about them Todd? It seems to me that if you can get by the cost (buy used) there isn't much downside to a vane turbo.

Thanks! :D

If I could find a gooseneck dump trailer with at least a 20 yard capacity, I would be hauling trash out of New Orleans with it. They're hard to find right now, though. The closest one I could find was in Ohio, and they couldn't promise me it'd be there when I got there. Otherwise, I tow boats, cars, tractors, whatever. I have a buddy who runs a mill shop, and I can haul wood from St. Louis for him if i need some cash. My old truck would literally smoke tires with 400 sq ft of pine flooring in the bed. Now I should be able to tote about 1500 no problem. Where as before it was: "Ehhh... I dunno. Maybe we should find a bigger truck.." it is now: "Bring it."

Tonneau cover?!? Pfft huff shheee.... I don't need no stinkin cover! How would I be able to throw Kyle's stinky tires in the bed from 15 ft. with a cover? :p

And, yes, I am representin' the Pimpster. Hell, I should own stock in BMW of Chattanooga by now!

Another cool feature is you can buy "Upfitter" switches from Ford to install in the dash to run whatever acc. you want. The harness is already in the dash. Just plug it in. There are unused wires run all over the place for you to put whatever you want on it. You can use one of them to control the "high idle" feature if you choose. Cool...

So when does the new controller and propane injection get installed? That should get that thing into the 12's.

Ditto on the chip. It did wonders for my 02 SD.

A friend of mine is a rep for Superchip and has the latest version in his 05 SD. Aside from having some serious towing snort the thing is astoundingly fast to about 120. Most cars would have a tough time keeping up with it. It would smoke my Super Eta to about 90.

500hp and something like 700ft-lb is nothing to sneeze at no matter what vehicle it's in.

Thanks guys. I am absolutely amazed by this thing.

As soon as the warranty is up, I'm going to put a programmer on it. I like the Banks 6 gun tuner. Gibson exhaust. Warn bumper/winch. ARB front locker. 35" tires on 16" wheels. Subtle lift via Ford (Severe duty front springs and F-350 4" rear blocks).

As son as the local Diesel tuning shop is back up, I'm going to plop down the $75 and get a baseline RWHP reading. While it's nice and new. See what I really got... ;)

Yup. This thing has an "electronic shift on the fly" knob. You can switch to 4hi at up to 50 mph. %)

I'd rather a manual transfer case. And I gaurantee that if this ESOF fails me once out of warranty, I'll be cutting a hole in my floorpan for a manual transfer case. Same goes for the auto-magic tranny.

Opposite the fuel level and oil pressure gauges is the coolant temp and tranny temp gauges.

Nice truck Booker! Tried parallell parking yet? Mine is a '99 SD w/a 6-speed. Not much on the road can stay w/these trucks in a hi-gear roll on from about 60 mph, particularly on a slight to steep incline! BIG torque is intoxicating. Enjoy!!!

BTW, I'm tagged for #24,500 gvw and along with other assorted trailers, also use a 20' gooseneck (flatbed) to haul equipment and trees. What does 1500 sf of pine weigh in at?
