My 2006 plan
Well it's a new year - last year my car had virtually no problems. This year is different, I have a crap load of blowby on cylinder 6 and probably other cylinders as well. I'm losing about 1-2 quarts every 2 weeks and all my intake lines are FILLED with oil (yuck!)
So, Ryan Brenneman has a 745i bottom end hanging out in his shed that I'll probably buy off of him. Since I don't have a garage or anything close - I'll probably heavy-man the block up to my room here at school and dedicate a corner to the engine.
So - What am I going to do? I'm going to build up the bottom end. Student loan money + Work + Small allowance = steady money flow
I believe I would be one of the first few to put actual performance pieces on their turbo e28 (minus Duke ) --_-- instead of just plopping a turbo on stock internals.
My plan:
() To figure out what I need for a 8.5:1 or 9:1 compression using high performance pistons - mahle or the VW option --- or whatever is available.
()The headgasket will be replaced with something more heavy duty... whenever they hit the market.
()Stock rods will be used, since they are forged from the factory. Unless Korman or others have a good deal on their peened rods.
()Rebuild kit will be purchased, I will replace all gaskets on the bottom end. I will also plop on some fresh bearings while I'm down there.
()A new/rebuilt oil pump will also be in store, so that I won't have to ever worry about replacing that BS.
------
Now - this is extra -- if I have the money (my wishlist )
Top end - Send in a junkyard head into Korman and have them pimp me out with some better valve springs, larger valves and such, and to do a little port and polish.
Along with that, I will (over the summer probably) get myself a front mount intercooler, which will mount behind the kidneys(up to a 22x18x3 FMIC). The piping will go straight to a modified throttle body to make things more simple. To top it all off, I'll get one of TCD's beautiful exhausts and plop it on.
Now I just gotta save up some serious $$$!
So - to start things off, the first thing I want to tackle are the pistons. Since you all have a good idea of what I want.. what do you suggest?

I just got off the phone w/ Korman, here's the deal on what they have:
$1290 - 6 lightweight competition connecting rods (any length needed... could be good for VW pistons)
$75/e - 47mm intake valves 39mm exhaust. Price is per, either or. ($900 for all 12)
$8.90/e - Dual valve springs - 7600rpm (not like i'll go that high... esp w/ a turbo car) ($107)
$?? - Retainers - forgot to record the price, but they are priced around the same as the springs.
$22/e - Rocker Arms - Lightened cast alloy rocker arms, contoured, peened and polished. ($264)
$1400 - Port and Polish (yeah right!)
$3500 - If i give them a head and say "Hook me up".
After seeing the prices, I think (if or when I do head work) I'll get the rocker arms, valves, retainers, and springs. I'll then just find a 533i cam and slap that on there. That's in the area of $1400... so... that will be AFTER I get a straight bottom end...

Tjn,
Theres no way Id spring for the conn rods unless I was planning to run more than 450hp. Theres no reason to spend that kinda money on somthing that has no use.
The way Id go, and is real cheap is to use a used b35 head(get as cheap as you can). Have a head shop clean it up and do all the normal checks. Use all of its stuff except the cam, use the b33 cam as you said. The b35 head has the dual valve springs already. Then get the custom pistons for the CR you want. The only caveat is if you plan to spin 6500rpm on a regular basis. Then you need to upgrade the valve train alot.
That head set up is good for 450-500hp crank with the right turbo, exhaust and FI system. Todd can hook you up with all that stuff.

I wouldn't waste any money at Korman's. His shop does good work, but they're way overpriced for anything. Look around at VAC Motorsports or something. If you want to turn high RPM you'll need to replace rockers (VAC has pretty good ones for M10s, which look about the same as the M30). We turn our M10 close to 8k routinely and a stock set of rockers will last about 20 hours. We have VAC rockers currently, but do not have that many hours on them yet, I'll let you know. Billet rockers (for an M10) are going to be available shortly; anyone know if they're the same for an M30?
Hey TJ,
I agree with russc in regards to the con rods. Just have the stock rods thoroughly checked and weight balanced. I would look into the ceramic coating of the CC, valve faces and exhaust ports. Gives you a big safety margin. If you have the piston crown ceramic coated, make sure to have it done before the weight match the pistons.
I have a band new head (B34) in the garage that I am going to build up for turbo application to include bigger valves. I want a back up for my Hartge H6S head and may swap it out some time in the future. The Hartge head may become more valuable to me as a component than on the engine.
Korman is way over priced and not doing anything special to the engines. They are not in the realm of Dinan $$ stupidity but they are on their way.
Have fun!

Want me to look around for any good shops in the ATL? Or does anyone reccomend any already? You can have everything done here and i can just start assembling it in my garage if you want.
Check out these guys, good 5erFest 2005 sponsors. They do lots of BMW work.

Well the rods are an idea - mainly out of frustration of me being the only one here able to murder 2 M30 engines in 2 years. I wanted something mother F%(#$ bulletproof this time. But yeah - they're totally out of the question now, they are just too expensive.
Alex - I might hit you up on that if you have gobs of free time down there... i sure don't have it here...
So.. Todd.. I'm sure you're sick of these questions BUT -
With a b35 head - what pistons do I need to get a compression between 8.5-9.0 (i might be OK with something sliiiiiiightly higher than 9.0 also.)
And - What's the word on those super headgaskets?

I just ordered 8 sets of forged pistons sets from JE. Pistons, rings and wrist pins. Rated to 720hp! $925 per set. CR 8:1 or 8.5:1 or 9:1 if you let me know NOW.
Headgaskets available TODAY!

there are no hard and fast rules for a paticular hp and cutoff. There guideling mostly on what Ive seen over the years.
Mostly, if you stay in the ~300-375whp range, and don't spend alot of time at WOT, the stock rods/crank can be fine. If your track schooling, autoxing or racing, then no, they wont be fine at those levels
If your above the 400whp range, then you need heavy duty gear, even if its for just street use.
what is the official word on con rods. i want to keep my stock rods for my build in june and hopefully break 500 rwhp but that might require a different turbo. russ, you seem to have some doubts that the rods are good for this kind of hp?
I disagree. I guess we'll find out because I expect to far exceed 400rwhp, drag race and use it for DS. I am using the stock rods and crank.

payment for those pistons has begun! Along with that me and yellow will need to find an engine shop around ATL (maybe pelican like from above?) that will bore the engine out to 92.5mm like Todd suggested.
I guess they can also do some balancing while they're at it... how assembled does the engine need to be to get it balanced? Hell I don't even know what's involved.
