Remember my cam timing issue? Well, the motor ran alright .....but just "alright" after I got it put back the way it should have been in the first place. It would go like hell under boost but otherwise exibited some very strange behavior. Vac was erratic, idle was all over the map.....the list goes on. After a very frustrating wrenchfest yesterday in an attempt to solve several issues I decided you guys were right and checked the valves again. Sure enough, one hole was well over an acceptable limit in a leakdown. This was a totally redone b35 top end with less than 50 milies on it. Shit!
I pulled the head this AM only to find that there are 6 divots in each piston on the intake side. Double shit !! To add insult to injury I looked down into the chain chain tensioner area and saw that the lowermost portion of the tensioner on the drivers side (looking at it from the front) was broken off and sitting on the bottom. Triple shit!!! Add this to an oil pump that was psychotic and I've got a total Charlie Foxtrot going on down there!
End result?? The motor is almost out and I'm building a new one from the ground up. The spare block is in getting cleaned, the head's in getting pulled apart and parts are on thier way as we speak. In retrospect it's probably the best thing that could happen since this motor has always been possessed. Now I will have a known quantity instead of an old motor that was literally falling apart inside.
Now we can have some REAL fun

It's funny that you had told me a couple times that you had all the parts on the shelf to build a new one...I think you were hoping it would happen. :p Good luck with the rebuild!

A ground up, turbo'ed engine build? Please, PLEASE document and photograph your progress! I know engines but have no experience with the M30, and the ultimate plan for my yet to be found project would be a nice solid engine (bulletproof) with 400ish HP. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would benefit from your buildup. Thanks for considering it.

send me $299 and i'll go disassemble my engine, take pictures and document the reassembly so you can see how to build a 450hp engine.

LOL! Do you have any info online about your buildup? The more data points the better!
I haven't searched the archives enough to ask specific questions, and I'm a ways off from getting started, but I am willing to sponge info from anyone kind enough to offer it.

I'll keep everyone informed as it goes. As far as a write-up, I don't think I could do any better than Duke has done.
Yeah, this car has been a headache from day one but I've also learned volumes in the process. Had I been smart and not started with a $400 junker I probably would have had fewer problems. Nobody's accused me of being smart though

More like two years. At least. Amazingly enough, when he blew the motor the first time he pulled it, rebuilt it, and had it back in the car and running in about 3 or 4 days.
Apparently the second time around he's decided to take his sweet time. Probably cause Todd's not around to pick on his slow ass car anymore.
Put that damn thing back together and on the road, will ya??

Thats Pat P's car (Big Red). He disappeared about two years ago. Not been heard from. Rumor has it that this car blew the new engine. You can see that the page has not been updated since May 2004.

I have often wondered what happened to his cars, he had a hell of a little collection going down there.
