would like to formally introduce the ed to the forum...
thanks! about the mileage, i think that odometer got reset before i came to own the ed. i have a history of the car from the previous owner and though it doesn't specifically mention it, it says 86000 km on one date and 9000 km on another about a year later.Verrrrryyy nice and clean ride. Low miles too. Welcome!
as for the SI board, the only thing that normally lights up are the inspection lights, and he's already been thru inspection, just haven't gotten around to getting them turned off. i understand you have to go to the agency to do it, unless there's another way?
and about me, i'm 22 yrs old, born and living in Panama. my family is very car-oriented, and have owned BMWs every year since 1992, the very first one being a white E36 318is coupe. mom's had a couple of 5 series and an X5, dad's leaned more towards the sports cars (including an E36 M3, an M roadster, a 330ci, a Z4 and the latest acquisition being a white 645ci). let's just say my dad has formed quite a bond with the dealership here. i realize it sounds sort of ritzy, but BMWs are about as common here as Toyotas are (it's been confirmed).
i came to own the ed in January 2005, it's my 2nd car. the story goes like this: after first getting my license at 18 (the required age here), i drove a 2002 Toyota Yaris hatchback-- not my dream car, i'd wanted an E36 since i could remember, but a wheels are wheels right? i had the car for 3 years and grew to love it, it's a great beginner's car especially in a place with maniacs behind the wheel. but i still dreamt of my BMW and got my kicks driving my best friend's 318ti once in a while. things started looking up when this old couple decided to let go of an E21 320i in perfect condition, and right when we were going to close the deal, the wife decided she couldn't part with it because it had a lot of sentimental value. understandable, but drat! about a year later, my dad calls me over and says he's found the perfect car for me. i asked what it was, he said BMW, and i said i'd take it. and get this: he paid just $2600 for it. he brought the car home that weekend and it's been with me since. after the Yaris, i didn't think i could drive a sedan, but i've gotten along just fine. the ed's had his share of quirks, but i attribute them to age, and i would really appreciate any help you all could offer in fixing him up and keeping him running, especially since i am desperately lacking any mechanical abilities.

Thankfully, mechanical abilites apparently are not required to make the E28 run! Just ask that 2monkeys guy. The only thing it seems that is required is the ability to produce a decent sentence from your typing fingers and, viola! The answer appears before you. This is a wonderful place, welcome. I covet your green interior.

all the E28s i've seen around here have Euro bumpers. i am guessing that only North America (U.S. and Canada) get the other kind.Do all other countries get the sweet Euro bumpers? Are parts cheaper from, say, Puerto Rico?
as for the parts being cheaper from PR, i've no idea... an example for the parts here would be me trying to replace a cracked differential and finding that at the dealership with a 15% discount it would cost $160 and getting exactly the same part for $90 at another auto parts store in town.

you can get a diff for $90 at a parts store?!? That's it--im MOVING to Panama!
seriously, welcome eta28! You have a very interesting car--I've never seen a green E28 outside of a junkyard in the US, and have yet to lay my eyes on a green interior--sweet indeed!
If you need any help fixing that thing, you've stumbled upon the right place. And don't sell yourself short mechanically; I've found that you can cripple an E28, but it's damn difficult to kill one--give it a shot--most mistakes can be rectified and you'll gain confidence in the car the more you mess with it--they love to be worked on!!!

there are a lot of E28s here. one of my dad's friends has a 518i but the paint is shot. my brother was considering switching his RX-7 for a 525i that was in as good or better conditions than mine (he turned it down, said the car didn't suit him). it all comes down to who's owned/owns the car i guess.
it's actually not a rare car, i see a couple every day around the city now that i think about it.
i'll try to post pictures of the streets here so you can see my lovely little isthmus.
p.s. i'm a girl.
