Oil temperatures in different locations

I got my oil temperature gauge today in the mail and was wondering a few things before I go into intalling it.

1) What is the best place to bung an oil temp gauge. Im thinking like near the bottom of the sump so I get fairly good reading while its almost always submerged.

2) What temps should I be looking for at
a) idle
b) crusing (~70)
c) boosting heavily (8psi) / racing....

Any helps in subject would be much appreciated. For those whol have one installed already, can you snap a few pics and either post them here, or emai them to aruc@spsu.edu

Thanks.

:dunno:

A guess is that it shouldn't run alot higher than the coolant temp?

1) In an e36 M3 race car I helped build, the temp sensor was put where the oil drain plug goes.

2) Russ is right for idle and cruising. Your oil temp will be right around the coolant temp. ~200 F. For racing you can expect temps up to about 280 F.

Alex,

Here's how I've done it on my car and for a couple of other folks:

Alex, you should really find out what size the hole is to your oil feed is -- then just buy a T adapter -- just T that sucker off! It should work just fine.
