M106 piston rings are a unique part number -- no cross ref to other 92mm pistons. Are the rings really unique? Anyone just use NA 3.5 rings in a rebuild?

When they built my M106 short block they used chrome-moly raceing rings. That does not answer your question but is an option.

Thanks Duke. I've thought about Total Seal. It occured to me that I've got a couple sets of old pistons with rings in the garage, so I can compare the old M106 rings to regular M30 rings. At least I can see if there are any obvious differences.

My understanding is if you use the chrome moly's you need to micro hone the cylinders to very fine finish. Anyone have input on this?
