My engine builder recommends the early simplex "Single Row" timing chains be replaced at about 75k miles. I've never heard of the dual row breaking, but it would probably be a good idea to check the condition of the sprockets @ 100k miles. In original E28 M5s the timing chain should be serviced regardless of mileage. The plastic chain guides have a tendency to become brittle and then breaking. Ask Scottie Sharpe about this, one of his chain guide allegedly broke and grenaded the engine in his M5. Scottie subsequently replaced the S38 with a Euro M88/3 and sold the salvagable parts from his S38.

Rich,
1. Any machining required to fit the duplex chain to the m88/3?
2. What are the parts and part numbers of the parts (geez) you used?
3. Any more details you can give about the conversion?
Thanks.

de Witt,
1) It's my understanding it does require machining. I didn't do the work so I don't know if it can be done without machining. The actual costs for the machine work was about $400. Steve H. may be able to add his comments.
2) I ordered everything in the timing chain assembly for a S38B35 engine.
3) Nope, othere than it's a very tight fit as you can see from the pics.
Sorry I couldn't offer any more info.
