As I was approaching the onramp for the I24 to work this morning and very nice black CLK 55 AMG pulled in front of me. I crossed my fingers and hoped he would signal to enter the freeway, he did. While traveling down the onramp he gave it some gas, I would say 90%, and I matched him perfectly. I had 10 psi selected and once we hit the freeway switched to 16 psi on my EBC.
Traffic was moderate and it allowed only a couple of WOT accelerations. I kept with him and even closed the gap some during these. I let him stay around 40 meters ahead of me. At one point I pulled next to him in the right lane and he looked over a smiled as he knew that I was able to easily keep with him during his short sprints.
Traffic started to open up and we were about 20 seconds from a mile opening of no traffic and the game would have been on. As we were doing a minor bit of posturing, I heard a loud "Woooooooohhssssssssss". The feed tube for my intercooler blew loose and I was out of the game. I had done some compression checks last night and evidently not secured it properly.
So the CLK 55 AMG proceeded up the road and did not receive the spanking that was coming.
It was another soldier so I will live to race again another day.

My Nissan would blow off pipes all the time until I got new silicone hoses and stronger clamps.
Ive seen quite a few of those 55's on the road lately, must be good business at MBZ this year.

Yea, I have 3/4" stainless steel T bar with spring tensioned clamps on both ends of the intercooler. I just did not install the IC correctly.

The pay must have really improved since my time in the USAF. The other soldier was obviously another officer.

Yup. You figure a few year old car would be in the $40Ks
Dont forget about the extra $1K a month we get while deployed. Still not worth it IMHO though.

Was this the 5.5L N/A CLK, or rather the 5.5L Supercharged version? 349hp vs. 469hp makes a little difference!

The info I found only showed a 379 HP model. That seems correct for the power I should have at 15-16 psi. Would explain the ease in my matching him.

The CLK didn't get the SC 5.4L M113 motor, just the NA. The CLK 55 coupe was dropped for 2005 and replaced with the 2006 CLK 63 480hp motor w/ 7 speed auto.
I worked for the AMG Ride & Drive program and learned a few things about that other German company.

That new AMG 6.3L S/C is ridiculous. Not as ridiculous as the twin-turbo, but still... geez, how much power do you trust in the hands of a M-B owner...

Nice quasi-Kill Duke.
You should be able to smoke him I would think.. similar crank HP but you have more WHP and I think your car ought to weigh less, no?

The 63s really aren't much better than the SC 55s. The E55 is actually faster than the E63. At the same time, I like the E63 much more (especially on a road course) because of the 7spd and the smoother engine. The trans in manual sport mode is actually really good with the paddles.
The 65s are completely different...talk about torque monster. I've done a few laps around Homestead at 140+ on street tires in the SL65. It could do that all day!
