Post by Lee in Ottawa »

Hey guys, i'm sending my cam away today to get freshened up. Was just thinking whether or not you guys think I should stick too the stock profile or get something different for the turbo appl?

How much hp ya looking to get outta ya motor?

What kinda of motor as well. I think that the stock cam for a m20 is good for 450 bhp.

But its much easier to make 450 hp with a hotter cam. A mild 272 would be great in a turbo car. I would keep the lift relatively tame though. With as much time as mine spends on the rev limiter I would keep the valvetrain in mind.

Hey guys, My plans for the car are the same as i'm sure most of yours.

This summer run the stage 1 and next summer intercooler and MegaSquirt and more boost.

The motor now has a mls gasket, 255 pump and 42lbs injectors.

As far as hp goals. I mean i'd like to be making 400-450 after the MS and +boost but we'll see if it happens.

So with this in mind what do you guys think I should tell the machine shop working on the cam?

If you're talking about a reground cam, tell them you want long duration with stock (or close to stock) overlap.

Other than that, I'm at a bit of a loss. Doesn't Cork Bell address cams in his book? He gives some hints, then says that stock is often the best choice as I remember.

We still havent established which motor you're boosting. I'd guess its an M30 with a goal of 450 HP. Thats up there...

Id say cam it like a Schrick 282. Those are really 272 cam(see the cam profile thread) and is a great balance between low end torque and top end power. You can either buy a 282 or have your shop regrind somthing to those specs.

The 282 will give you just about equal torque/hp #s. That makes for a well balanced power curve. The stock cam really falls down after 5k. See Todds 733i dyno chart in this forum with a 272 and head work, its a thing of beauty.
