Hmmm

Post by turbodan »

I was out getting groceries yesterday when I thought I broke another halfshaft. I was making a left turn and was just beginning to accelerate in first gear. I put the old 3.25S back in for an upcoming road trip, so I'm actually using first gear again. All of the sudden, my right foot got really heavy, as it seems to do rather frequently. As the thrust came on at about 3k, I heard a very loud bang under the car, and the car was coasting as if i had taken it out of gear.

When I got under there, everything appeared intact. The half shafts were good, the driveshaft was good, tranny and engine mounts were good. So I got back in, put it in gear, and drove it away.

I've gone another 30 miles or so since, and its driving and shifting fine. I'm thinking it just popped out of gear, or it wasn't fully engaged. If thats the case, I'm not sure what to think about the tranny. It got the Metric Mechanic "Ultimate" Transmission treatment in Spring '06, so it shouldn't be a tranny to pop out of gear under hard acceleration. And I worry about the damage done (if any?) when it popped out of gear under 250+ ft-lbs of torque. I would tend to believe that once it pops out once, its going to be more likely to do it in the future. Any ideas or experience with this sort of thing would be appreciated...

I think it popped out of gear too. Drain the trans and check for metal or metallic colored fluid. If it's clean and everything is shifting properly now, there's nothing you should do. The gear shift has a positive detent into each gear, right?

It sure does. I think its about due for a trans fluid change anyway, so I'll go ahead and do that. Hopefully, no chunks...
