Engine Prep?

Hey guys, ok so I haven't had my bmw for very long but I'm already in love with it. I'm working on completely redoing the suspension and brakes, and after that it's going to be time for the engine. I want to plan it out and perhaps start purchasing all necessary parts for the turbo kit. the TCD kit looks great and so are the numbers it's producing. My engine has 135K miles on it and its history is completely unknown. I want to get the engine rebuilt (perhaps not completely) before the turbo goes on. My HP goals will probably be around 350whp which shouldn't be too hard to achieve (with the proper amount of money ofcourse). I was looking at korman to perhaps do the engine work, their 3.8L stroker kit makes me giggle so perhaps thats the way to go before the turbo? The car is not going to be for drag racing, just overall street performance and an occasional track visit here and there. I'll have a decent amount of money left over at the end of the summer and that should be able to cover most of the costs. What actual engine modifications should I do before going to TCD and then trying to reach my HP goals? I'd like to perhaps start purchasing a few parts at a time (that way I get locked into the project and will go through with it 100%, just the way my crazy mind works).

Welcome. Do a compression test. If it is consistantly in the 130-145 range than your engine is in good health. Pull the cyl head and have it refreshened. Install a new HG (MLS or stock) and ARP head studs and call it a day. You could also use a m30b35 (1988-up e34/e32 chassis) cyl head. We almost never rebuild engines just to do it. These motors are remarkable for taking punishment without failing.
