Anyone have turbocharged M20 in CA that is smog legal. I have 528 super eta and not sure about going with just i head conversion or do turbo as well. Anyone have experience with smogin turbo in ca.

I don't live there or anything, but if theres any sort of inspection you would be hosed right there. It could be tuned to pass with a catalytic converter, but I doubt the actual emissions would be your only hurdle.

From what I've learned, you need a CARB sticker, and the Dinan stuff seems to be the only stuff that's CARB legal, but I don't think they did anything for an M20.

You could buy a 524td shell, put your M20 in it and turbo it that way, since the td came with a turbo.

That would run way too clean for a 524td. I wonder if they would notice.

Then put some charcoal in the tailpipe?

I'm doing exactly this right now. Combining all the best parts of a 524td and 528e. Once I really get into it, I detail the project.

I first want to get the 524td running to see how the cylinder head is.....ie does it look as if combustion gases get into the coolant passages. Next, I want to get the 524td registered to make is smog exempt for as long as it's in California. Unfortunately, the bonehead who filled out the title released any interests on the front, but also put them as the lienholder to be recorded on the back, that I missed when looking at the title. I think this makes the title document void? Bonehead!

Yes but putting a gas engine in a car that was originally a diesel causes the car to no longer be a "diesel".

Luckily, a vehicle with diesel VIN is exempt as well.

No. If you don't have to have it inspected, they don't need to know.
