Took the 745i to the dragstrip tonight.

Post by T_C_D »

Called first to make sure they were open. ;)

Only ran twice. 14.94 and 14.97 at abt 12psi. The lag is just aweful but the car ran perfectly. Super smooth and almost silent.

2.389 60ft
9.862 1/8
78.54 mph
14.95 1/4
97.61 mph

Nice cool night. 70F. Heavy on gas and 70lber riding shotgun.

Sounds like a good baseline to compare things to when you put the wet nitrous on! I cant wait till I get things together so I can pump out some big #'s!!! Thanks for sharing.

Good conservative baseline #s Tood!

Is the 70lber your son? If so, way to go, wish my dad had been into cars!

I have three sons. My middle one is the gearhead. He was in the e36 when we went mid 12s.

AWESOME! I've never been involved in drag racing untill I raced mine and my buddy's tuned Acura RSX-s and now I'm hooked! I really want to drive a TCDS-1 kit and I may get a chance here soon.

Kudos for letting him ride with you, that's awesome.

The best part about the night was the 2nd race. I am lined up with a stock EVO 8. 90% of driver's have no clue how to launch them so they disappoint at the track. We launch. The 745i is really slow the first 100 or so feet. He grabs 1.5 cars. I then proceed to close the gap to his rear bumper. At the 1/8 mile I am running more mph. I stay right there all the way to the finish. He beats me by 1 car length.

What's cool about this race is that is a real world outcome. No magazine racing!

BTW. He runs 98.01 mph and I run 97.6 mph.

I hope to see another EVO 8 the next time out because it'll be ugly.

Todd,

 I belong to that 90% as I have never launched an auto before - how do you launch and auto? My thinking is stand on the brakes and get the rpm up close to the stall speed and let go of brakes while flooring the throttle when green. Am I close?

I meant the EVO driver's don't know how to launch. You have the correct technique for launching a 745i.

I was under the impression that stock Evo's ran a little faster than high 14's. That is very weak sauce.

Made my first mod today. Eliminated the huge cat and resonator and replaced it with 2.25" pipe. This is the first time I actually fabricated an exhaust. Sweeney usually does all the fabrication. Lost 35lbs with the swap.

Mostly just did it for fun and practice. I think the next step is to upgrade the intercooler. I want to maximize the car with the stock turbo at 12psi prior to doing the big swap.

Engine seems to spool slightly faster but it's not a huge difference. I s/b able to go back to the track with the car next Friday.

Put the staggered style 5s back on. I am actually glad this car didn't sell. Anyone think it can become the fastest Arctic Blue BMW in the USA?

No doubt esp w/a wet nitrous setup! You have a pipe bending machine in the shop too eh?

Todd, this has the non-EH tranny right? Do you feel this can take more abuse than it's EH brother?

I believe they are mechnically identical with only the valve body being different.

Mine has been slipping for a while. It's hanging up in first gear now. Monday we may install a rebuilt non EH and 3000 stall. That should take care of the lag.

I wonder if you can use the servo pistons out of the Range Rover variant to firm up the shift points?

The tranny I am going to use is a lower mileage rebuilt unit from the 732i euro car that I purchased to rebuild the 745i. It was a great shifting tranny.

I also have a rebuilt and modified tranny that a friend did some tricks to but I am saving it.

It will be for a while. Just bought an arctic blue M635. Someday I'll have to try to find a turbo manifold then it might come close.

Todd if you want them to shift a little firmer then tweak the adjustment on the pressure regulator.

After all that, the car is sold. Doing another exhaust tomorrow since the new Owner requires a cat. dual 2.25" in to single 3" out to a Magnaflow muffler.

Car leaves on Saturday.

Wow! If you had done that a couple of months ago, just think! Congratulations on the sale.

Not at all. On the contrary I'd love to see something that is a break from the norm. I'm quite sure there is a ton of untapped potential that few (such as yourself) have taken the time to research & refine. ;) If I had the resources for R&D it would be sweet to build 2 of the baddest machines on both an M20 & M30 platform.
